The Calling: Celebrating Sarah Vaughan

The real Dianne Reeves demonstrates How a song is sung
Dianne Reeves has risen above the commercial norm with this album. She's far beyond just another singer. Sjhe's a genuine jazz gift to those of us who best understand music when we're intimate with it. The best example of what I mean is "If You Could See Me Now." She conveys in the song the intimacy she feels and, thus, allows us to sharer that intimacy with her. Five stars is not nearly enough.

Dianne Reeves is Sensational
Well all I can say is I am really happy with this CD. Dianne Reeves is one of my absolute favorites and I love the fact she put out an album honoring Sarah Vaughan, a jazz icon. Sarah would be pleased with this album I'm sure. I know I am.

Simply fantastic
I listened to this CD over and over when I first got it. The combined high level of artistry and entertainment value is downright inspiring. Billy Childs is now one of my favorite arrangers (sorry, I just had never heard of him before this. Shameful, I know). The ONLY reason I didn't give this five stars is that there are just a couple tracks that I tend to skip over more often than listen to (I'll let the listener judge for themselves).

Send in Dianne Reeves - tribute to "The Divine One"!
Be prepared to have the thrill of your life, as Dianne Reeves takes -"The Divine One" Sarah Vaughan to the next level. This is one awesometribute to an artist who had all the dynamics of what life had tobring if you were a female singer during those troubled times. Each one of these jewels spells the haughty or down-home, bossy orshy, diva-like or painfully insecure, had it all and was really hardwhen she had to be, maybe hardest on herself - Sarah Vaughan.Onlyone singer could do her justice - Dianne Reeves, who in her own righthas all the God-given-talent to stand tall in the studio, front ofthis magnificent orchestra, delivering effortlessly on each trackflawless performances touching on every phase of Vaughan'scareer.Of course there are stand outs - "LULLABY OFBIRDLAND" (George Shearing/Forster), classic tune and thisclassic interpretation by Dianne..."SEND IN THE CLOWNS"(Stephen Sondheim), Dianne and Billy Childs pay homage to Sarahwithout imitating her, completely reconceived the song, slow dramanticaria expressing Vaughan's darkest fears..."I HADN'T ANYONE 'TILYOU" (Ray Noble), Dianne's sly, sexy vocal, have the low-downswing of Vaughan's (1981) recording with the Count Basie orchestra -trumpeter Clark Terry, Dianne's early mentor - adds his familiar"mumbles" and a one hot solo. And the the highlight -"SPEAK LOW" (Kurt Weill/Nash), sensual wordless opening, completely mesmirizing with haunting over-tones that will stay withyou for a long time.Hats off to Blue Note Records, George Duke,Billy Childs, Robert Freedman and to everyone who contributed to thisoutstanding album - "The Calling - Celebrating SarahVaughan"...the classic tribute and performances by MISS DIANNEREEVES!Total Time: 65:30 on 11 Tracks...Blue Note 7243 5 276942...(2001)
