good concept...didn't work for my situation
I bought this because I have one cat who likes to graze, a little at a time all day, and another cat who likes to inhale everything he can find (and becomes overweight very easily if allowed to ) I thought that I could put the "grazer's" food in the bowl and it would allow her to snack through the day but the inhaler wouldn't be able to steal her food.... it didn't work that way. This bowl opens when the pet wearing the collar is up to 3 feet from the bowl. (even if that pet is just walking by) Not even 2 days and my inhaler cat learned to just hang out near the bowl and as soon as the grazer came within 3 feet, the bowl would open and the inhaler would wolf down the food. He also figured out that if he kept his head in the bowl, even if the lid started to close on his head, it would re-open if it felt resistance. I returned this item.

Worked great, until it didn't.
Great food dish to keep greedy eaters out of the slow eaters dish! Only downfall so far is the infared device your cat wears on it's collar is quite large and it takes them some getting used to having to wear. My skinny cat learned it within seconds using some Temptations in the bowl.. the greedy fat cat has yet to figure out why it closes on his head though haha. UPDATE:COLLAR SENSOR STOPPED WORKING AFTER ABOUT A WEEK. WE REPLACED THE BATTERY AND IT WORKED AGAIN FOR ABOUT 5 HOURS AND QUIT AGAIN. RETURNING FOR REFUND.

It's alright
At first I hated this with a passion and rated it 1 star and I was intent on returning it, but after a few days my cat adjusted to it and all has been well and it's actually made my life so much easier. I've had it for a week now and have decided I really like this thing, although there are some things I would still like changed.I still don't like how huge and bulky the collar tag is, and the sensor doesn't work all the time when it's just hanging off the collar, but it comes with a clip on the back of it so you can clip it onto the collar to keep it in one spot instead of having it hang there like a tag, so it doesn't move around and bump into things or drape into her water bowl. The clip also fixed the sensor issue, so now the bowl works consistently and doesn't close on her head like it was doing before. I'm guessing that before the tag was hanging down so low and maybe turning in the wrong direction or getting buried in her fur or something so the sensor wasn't connecting to it, but it works perfectly fine when it's clipped onto the front of her collar now.I was very annoyed with the set up process though. I had to buy a mini screw driver to take apart the collar tag, install the battery for the collar which was included, and set the "switches", which was all very inconvenient. Why didn't the manufacturer just do it themselves or create this in such a way that all I have to do is put it on my cat's collar and turn it on.The big 4D batteries for the bowl were NOT included which pissed me off, and what's worse is it does NOT come with the cord pictured, they make you buy that separately just to rip you off even more.It makes a noise that freaked my cat out every time it opened and closed, but it doesn't bother her anymore, she got used to it within a few days.I was worried at first that the style of the bowl would be uncomfortable for her because it's tall and the bowl inside is set deeper than the edges, but she seems to like it just fine now.I have 2 cats. One cat is a hungry hungry hippo who eats anything and likes to gobble up her food as soon as she's done eating and she never eats it all, there's no way he can graze all day or he would become obese. But she has a special, expensive hypoallergenic food and she prefers to graze all day. This has definitely fixed the issue of him eating her food, and now she can go and eat whenever she wants during the day.I find that it closes pretty fast after she has finished eating and turned away, there is no way he can get to her food bowl in that time. It has solved that issue for me.

Works as designed, for 2 cats in my case
I have only dropped this to 4 stars because so far, the cats run a mile when it opens. The technology is excellent...easy to assemble and program each of the 2 bowls I purchased to the appropriate cat infra-red collar tag. Works are expected (and even closes if the cat retreats), but even after a few weeks letting them each from the open and unplugged bowls, they are still not smart enough (or brave enough) to use the bowls with the tags and the automated mechanism. If this changes in the coming weeks I will of course update this review (the cats are not starving BTW, I turn on the bowls at night for the moment). Wonderful way to seperate feed your pets
This product is great on trying to feed one pet separately. The batteries does need to be changed on a monthly based so I advise getting the adapter for the bowl and lots of spares for the collar sensor. The battery placement on the sensor can be a little loose causing it not work. I advise that you tape the battery in place and test sensor before putting it together. Overall this bowl has been great and we have had it for over 6 months now.
