Im antiken Rom schreibt man das Jahr 180 nach Christus. Der siegreiche General Maximus ist der Liebling des Kaisers Marcus Aurelius, und der Herrscher will den mutigen Kriegsherrn sogar zu seinem Nachfolger bestimmen. Seinem eigenen Sohn Commodus, der sich mit Vorliebe an grausamen Gladiatorenkämpfen ergötzt, traut der Kaiser das schwierige Amt nicht zu.Als der machtbesessene Commodus das erfährt, tötet er seinen Vater und lässt sich selbst zum Cäsaren krönen. Er verstößt Maximus vom Hof und befiehlt seinen Tod. Maximus gelingt die Flucht, und er kann sich in seine Heimat durchschlagen, wo er nach Jahren blutiger Schlachten endlich seine Frau und seinen Sohn wieder sehen will. Doch Commodus Schergen kamen ihm zuvor und töteten seine Familie. Maximus gerät in Gefangenschaft und wird als Sklave in eine Gladiatorenschule verkauft. Dort lernt er die grausame Kunst des Schwertkampfes, um schließlich als Gladiator nach Rom zurückzukehren. Stets mit einer Maske auftretend bleibt Maximus unerkannt und wird schnell zum Liebling der Massen. Allein die Aussicht auf Rache gibt ihm die Kraft, in der Arena Tag für Tag sein Leben aufs Spiel zu setzen.Der ungeschlagene Kämpfer kennt nur ein Ziel: seinem Peiniger gegenüberzutreten und den Tod seiner Familie zu rächen! ABSALUTELY INCREDIBLE!!!
This movie is amazing! This version is so crisp and clear you can see the form of the guys tear when he is crying. It is absalutely Fabulous. It is extended by about 1/3 through the whole movie. With many more parts showing in depth, the psychosis of Commdus. This movie is just Beautifully acclaimed. The clarity pierces the eyes. Its at times hard to watch because its So Clear. I will recommend this movie to anyone who wants to see a REAL gladiator. There is none better then this or even can be. It is ALL region so it will play on all and any blu-ray player. If you are wondering if you should buy this or if you are choosing between this and other versions. I will tell you there IS NO version that can match this one. I first thought well it is a bit spendier then I would normally pay, but now i know that if it was more I would have still bought it, for this kind of quality. Very Highly Recommended Product!

Long delivery, non-English box?!
Quite disappointed that when the Blu Ray arrived the box was in a different language (German, I think). It's worth noting that the image that appears on Amazon shows the box in English...Alarm bells started going, so I had to open the wrapping to check the Blu ray (which was another pain, as it was a Christmas gift and I'd rather have avoided that). The Blu Ray audio was thankfully in English but it kind of took the shine off it having the box in another language, as well as it having to be taken out of it's wrapping. I had no choice but to present the gift due to a long delivery (2 weeks) and explain that the Disc was fine, but apologise for the box. Not ideal by any means. The movie itself is great though.

Quality not up to standard
Original DVD was superior quality. Bought blue ray to see if quality was better on 4k TV, unfortunately fell well short.
