Penny Dreadful: The Final Season
M**.
Mostly, good, but could have been better (prior season spoilers)
+++Warning, this contains minor spoilers from the prior season, but no major season three giveaways+++Season three, which would ultimately be the final season of Penny Dreadful picks up after the events of season two, resulting in the characters being scattered and alone. Ethan is whisked back to America after turning himself in for the murders at the inn, Vanessa is still in London undergoing therapy, and Sir Malcolm is in Africa. As the prior season had, this one has a bunch of mostly parallel storylines that intertwine over the course of the season. The main storyline this season involves Dracula, who has been teased since season one, and the storylines of the big three characters culminate in a battle versus Dracula. For those who get the Blu-Ray, the show looks and sounds great in HD once again. There are a lot of CGI effects that get worked seamlessly into the practical shots, so it really does look like it was shot in Victorian London. The extras are fairly sparse, especially for the final season of the show. There are a handful of short making-of and behind-the-scenes featurettes that run about 12 minutes in between all of them, and then some character profiles.Overall, the season is good, but it ends pretty abruptly and makes the curious choice of introducing new major characters who never get fully developed storylines because of the short run of episodes. If the writers and showrunners knew that the show would end after this season, it would have made more sense just to focus on the existing characters. Eva Green again deserves props for her portrayal of Vanessa. She can go from playing Vanessa as an upright Victorian woman to someone who is completely insane with ease. One of the best episodes of the season is one that shows Vanessa's time being institutionalized in an Asylum in a flashback episode. Green has to change directions with the character multiple times during that episode and does a wonderful job. The show is definitely still an adult drama with a lot of violence and nudity, but if that does not bother you, it is definitely worth your time to watch (if you like horror stories). If you have not seen the show yet, definitely start with season one, and do not try to jump in at the end. If you have seen and liked the prior seasons, then you will probably like this one as well.

How happy I was to know I was able to get this through Amazon.
I bought season 1&2 of Penny Dreadful at a location very cheap.... not knowing how much I was going to enjoy this series. Which I found out that it had 3 seasons. So I found the 3rd w you. Which made my over viewing enjoyment. Plus the price was so reasonable. And shipping super quick... thanks for the superb service.

A great unique series comes to a sudden end.
The third and last season of the show begins where it left off with all the main characters alone and on their own way feeling depressed and down and slowly picking up the pieces of their minds and hearts. After the devil has failed to claim Vanessa Ives for his mate, this entire season is time for his material brother Dracula to make her his bride.Penny Dreadful's Dracula is completely different from all previous movies and any other show that presented the character so none of the preexisting notions and nuances of the vampire are shown here.New characters include Vanessa's female therapist Dr. Seward, Dr. Henry Jekyll a close college friend of Frankenstein, Ethan's adoptive american indian father Kaetenay, a new friend for Vanessa, Catriona Hartdegen who studies the dead and death and with them new plots are introduced. As the show progresses we yet again see more of Vanessa's most interesting past, this time a more detailed account of her stay at the women's asylum, where (spoiler alert) she meets the would be creature or John Claire. We are also presented with the full story of Ethan's past as many episodes are set in the Old West New Mexico of the USA, including who gave him his werewolf curse and why.As always all performances are top notch as well as all the production values. Sadly the series end too suddenly in finale that seems very rushed and too out of character for the main protagonists (Vanessa Ives and Ethan Chandler), with none of the new characters ever developing their new stories nor seeing more of them. This as far as I can tell was due because Showtime cancelled the show halfway filming this third season, due to low ratings and high costs of production. Originally John Logan meant this show to last more, but being under contract he and the cast had to make these little videos saying this was all there is to it and that was it. This is not the first time Showtime cuts a series short due to their high expectations. In general Penny Dreadful was an unique psychological thriller, a Victorian Gothic horror tale that fused together all the famous literature monsters of the time (Dracula, Frankenstein's creature, Dorian Gray, and many others) in one long tale. Though a Gothic horror show it was never about the gore and blood, which is present and graphic but done tastefully, it was more about the lives of the characters and how they intertwined together. There is action, romance, sex, violence, but also the evil side of the supernatural and questions about being human and the life here and beyond.Even though I hate the ending, hence my 4 stars clearly this show was meant to go on further, I urge all fans to buy all seasons and if you love the music the soundtrack CDs. The show is unique, classy and very rich in its language and Victorian England's poetry. No one has done TV Gothic horror with such class before and I doubt anyone will again. Highly recommend the entire series. Also on a curious note, Showtime has marketed all merchandise for this last season very differently from 1 and 2. Vanessa and Ethan were the poster dandies for most merchandise, all season 3 items have either new artwork or the photo of the naked male figure forming the human skull on the honeycomb tiled floor.

Great and dark season up until the last 2 episodes
Recently finished watching the season and can say it's one of the strongest out of all three up until the final 2/3 episodes, when it falls apart and flames out quietly. The scale has been opened up tremendously, and the show boasts some of the strongest cinematography of any show for most of its run. The characters get some great development too and we get some new ones which add to the overall tapestry, but...It's clear the show was canceled, with characters introduced only to do nothing with them (Hello Dr. Jekyll). Important characters meet rushed ends while storylines are either resolved quickly or go nowhere. Most of all, the show gives our main protagonists (Vanessa) such a slipshod and weak ending, you'll find yourself hating this show before the last credits roll. They were on to something special and it would've been great to see where this show went with either a longer season or an additional one. Because the show has such a horrible last few episodes, I can't give it five stars but rather four, as it is a strong season up until the "last" stretch.

Also: AUGEN AUF VOR DEM KAUF!
