Ludwig Bemelmans: Speaking and Painting

Having newly discovered Bemelmans (through a gift of Hotel Splendide to my wife, which of course I read first), I did not know what to expect ... perhaps just a bunch of cartoons. But I was more than pleasantly surprised. This book is a goldmine, to both fans of the Madeline children's books and of his novels. From the concise and well written text you will learn things about the artist/author, his family, and his travels that I bet are not found anywhere else. Plus of course, luscious reproductions of Bemelmans' intriguing drawings, murals, and paintings.
