Excellent book on the subject
I've looked at a lot of gum printing books, and this is by far the best.

Excellent book!
This book is worth every penny and I rarely feel this way concerning how to books. It's well written and organized in a logical manner. I own a few books on alternative processes and have previously purchased how to books on Gum printing, but the information was slight and in some cases inaccurate and outdated. One of the things really enjoyed in this book was the inclusion of other gum printers, their methodology, their thought and their work. In my opinion, the only area the author failed to address in enough detail was in making digital negatives. A few more pages and a little more detail would have been nice, but in fairness there are already books already on the shelves that address this complicated subject. Gum printing is a fascinating medium and if you are thinking about investing some time and money into learning about this process....well this book is an excellent place to start.

The condition of the book might not be the best.
Very good in depth information on Gum Printing. I was very excited to receive this book since I'm attempting a body of work focused on historic processes. Unfortunately the book was delivered in not so great condition twice and for the money paid I would've expected better... much better but third time's a charm they say and finally I have a book in great condition.

Great information and visually rich!
Christine has written a complete and inspiring manual not only for those of us who have been involved in the alternative processes for years but a book that can serve as a guide for those just being introduced to this fascinating aspect of the history of analogue photography. Great directions and wonderful illustrations. If I were still teaching I would make this a text requirement....and come to think of it it would make a great workshop reference. Thanks so much Christine!

Great Book - Must Have
If you are thinking about alternative photo printing and looking at Gum Bichromate, then this is a MUST HAVE BOOK. I have read several others and this one is the best that I have found. Step by Step on what you need and what you need along with sources to the the supplies that you are going to need. Five stars falls short on this book.

A contemporary gum printing bible, Anderson compiles everything you need to know to get started as well as keep going. As a master's student focusing on gum printing the addition of contemporary gum artists at the end of the book pushes the book past useful to completely insightful. Gum process is so varied that getting a peek into so many artist's personal processes is inspiring and super helpful with personal experimentation.

Poor Printing Quality and Publisher Customer Service
While I presume the material in the book is adequate, the actual quality of the physical was poor. This review focuses more on the book quality and publisher customer service. The first book I received had a printing defect on practically every page.... almost as if printed by an ink jet printer and the ink was running out. The top quarter of the page was lighter, a dotted print line was visible. I sent for a replacement from Amazon. When it arrived I could feel though the package that the book actually felt thinner than my previous edition. Upon opening it I noticed that it was printed on entirely different paper stock, paper finish etc. The first copy was a heavy, semi gloss or gloss stock. The second on a cheaper matte, stock. Neither book was desirable.. I would have kept the original copy but it was defective. For a $60 paperback I expect a lot better quality. I contacted Routledge directly to find out how they print there books or some information on why the copies where so differnt... I never received an answer. After several emails and weeks... nothing. I am still unsure of the actual stock, gloss etc that they use on this book.. apparently it is anything goes. I returned both copies. I will not be purchasing books from Routledge.

Bible of gum!
The bible of gum by one of the recognized experts in the field. Christina is extremely thorough in her methodologies and directions, and what a wealth of samples from the great list of folks making gum prints!

Superb!
This book on gum printing and its variations is the most detailed book of its kind on the subject. Written by Christina Z. Anderson, Professor of Photography at Montana State University, it covers not only gum printing but other dichromate based methods of printing such as casein. Gum 'over' methods such as gum over platinum or cyanotype are also included. Anderson is one of the leading lights in gum printing (and several other processes) and is the Series Editor for the Focal Press/Routledge's Contemporary Practices in Alternative Process Photography. This two part book starts with the history of the process before guiding the reader from setting up the dimroom, to evaluating the final print. As well as clearly explaining the gum process, including troubleshooting, the book also has a useful chapter on digital negatives. The second part of the book is lavishly illustrated with work and work practice from over 80 gum printers. With over 400 images, and 300 pages this book is the most comprehensive on the topic and is an essential addition to the alternative photographers' library. As a gum printer, I can't recommend this book highly enough. Please be aware that potassium/ammonium dichromate is banned in the EU and the UK, although there are other sensitisers/methods such as the Chiba method.Happy printing everyone!
