A firm natural overdrive with a pleasant silky sustain. The Fender Magic 6 sound! An easy to handle overdrive with great sustain without any unnatural compression. It keeps the characteristics of the tones that the guitars naturally produce. The Jan Ray reproduces that great sustaining punchy clear tones of the blackface Fender amps from the 60's. The tone is crispy yet the low is warm and mellow.Specifications Controls: Volume, Gain, Bass, Treble, Saturation trimmer Switches: ON/OFF Terminal: Input, Output Power: 006P (9 Volt Battery) or 9Volt regulated AC/DC adapter Size: 70(W)x112(D)x50(H)mm Weight: 428g

Magic.
My initial intent was to use this in front of my Friedman BE-100 to get what you just can't with that amp--a clear, mid-full, edge of breakup tone that's just really outside of typical Marshall territory. I got that in front of the clean channel, as you'd expect. What I didn't expect was how damn good it was in front of the BE (gain) channel. On most amps with 2 gain channels you typically get 2 versions of gain, maybe slightly different EQ. With the Jan Ray, I can set a moderately low gain setting on the BE (gain) channel and when I hit the front end with the Jan Ray, all the tightness remains but the character shifts a bit toward a mid-warm. Very nice. This pedal is worth it for not only its character, tone, gain structure, but for it's tactile feel...solid, heavy, gorgeous.

It's creamy with the perfect mixture of saturation and dynamics
Now I understand what the fuss is all about. I've been on a search for THAT overdrive sound for a long time and now the search is over. It sounds trite, but it is true. I agree with Dan and Mick of #thatpedalshow that a pedal has no sound and is merely an element, an ingredient in the larger recipe. To keep that analogy going, this thing is butter. It's creamy with the perfect mixture of saturation and dynamics. The EQ is bonkers and would allow you to dial it in to work with most amps. I pair it with my Les Paul or my Strat into my '65 fender deluxe reverb and my mesa 5:25 express. It's got that southern rock, roots thing going on and it gushes mojo. I understand why people say it's a black face in a box. #vemuram I salute you. I will come find you one day on your tiny island and give you a high five. The #janray is simply amazing and completely worth every penny.

Best overdrive
This is absolutely the best dumble style overdrive. It's expensive but worth paying for.

A very expensive Timmy clone
Do a Google search for Vemuram Jan Ray and you will find a website that dissects this baby. It is a clone of the Paul Cochrane Timmy with one tiny tweak to the treble control. You decide if it is 7 times better than a Caline Pure Sky that you can buy here for $27.

Better than the Timmy
For years I've seen the online argument that the Jan Ray is an "overpriced Paul Cochrane Timmy clone" and have always been curious. Within the last year I have now come to own both a Timmy and a Jan Ray. The layout and boost/cut style EQ are the same and for all I know, maybe the Jan Ray circuit is derived from Timmy circuit, I don't know. What I do know is, whatever "minor tweaks" Vemuram made to that circuit make a HUGE difference in tonal quality. The Jan Ray is clearly a better sounding pedal to my ears and best mid gain drive I've ever heard besides the Klon Centaur. After owning both I can safely assume that the people saying "save your money and get a Timmy" have probably never A/B'd them head to head. My only knock on the Jan Ray is the same knock I have on many expensive pedals; for that money on a pedal, I'd rather not have PCB mounted jacks.
