First of all, I was asked about the flavor of this item! It does not have one, fortunately. The instruction quality was a bit unclear, and it may or may not make a great gift. Giving one of these to a brewer might seem a bit like giving a wrench to a mechanic. I would make sure that this is something that they need first. If it is a novice brewer, then this would make a good gift, but make sure that you also include a plastic test cylinder! The device works, and gives a fairly good estimate on alcohol content. It is a good idea to buy two of these, because they feel breakable. Peace of mind is worth a few extra dollars. It is important to buy a test cylinder, and I prefer the ones made of plastic. This device has been a game changer in my kombucha brewing. Kombucha can have a wide range of alcohol content, so it is best to have a good estimate of the exact amount.

I like the color coding for the brewing of beer and fermenting of wine. It makes easier to see through the plastic and figure it out. Glass would’ve been loads better and easier to read. Without those you wouldn’t be able to even guess approximately.
