4.9 stars but that's close enough ;)
Review of the Brightech - DanceOut Portable Wireless Bluetooth 4.0 SpeakerI bought this to replace a slightly smaller speaker that cost three times as much and lasted only about two years. Frankly, at this price my expectations weren't all that high. To my delight it has surpassed the old speaker in every way. It's primarily used to give more oomph to an iPad when watching videos and movies. It has amazingly good volume that stays clean unless both the iPad and speaker are turned to maximum. Even then it's good though it may -- repeat may -- get a little buzzy. The bass is strong and improved by the fact it is not down firing. That was a weakness of the old speaker. Its down-firing bass relied upon the surface it sat upon so if one wanted to watch in bed… forget it. It sounded like AM radio fidelity. That's certainly not the case here.It has effortlessly paired to everything in my Apple ecosystem. It also seems to remember the last two devices and connects with them especially quickly. I expect it should pair with anything just as easily. Be aware that the power-on and pairing tones are LOUD and not controlled by the volume buttons. It's not an issue for me but someone wishing to start and pair it someplace quiet like in bed may feel otherwise. The only thing I might consider a failing is there seems to be no warning when the battery is getting low. It simply stops working. That said, it will operate while connected to power and recharging which is not something every BT speaker can claim. I won't ding it for that but it's something for the manufacturer to consider as an improvement. The one time I let it run down completely took nearly three days. Of course it wasn't in use the whole time but I wanted an idea of how long it may last just looking for something to play.A couple more things. The rubberized case is very nice. It often gets used in my workshop were it's exposed to sawdust and the occasional gravity test. It's weathered everything tossed at it just fine. Its BT range has been impressive. I've even paired it to my computer on the second floor and played music in the basement. It may be only about 20-25 feet but loads of forced-air ductwork create a virtual Faraday cage. Again, the old speaker rarely stay connected.Bottom line. For about 20 bucks this speaker has little risk and loads of reward.

Was hoping it would work with Chromecast Audio. Didn't work, but find it impressive none the less!
Update: I continue to be very impressed by this. I have this and a couple of Oontz speakers. I prefer this hands down. It sounds better overall on more source material, and is a joy to use. I've updated my overall rating. This thing is a fantastic value. So I bought it hoping that the USB charging and Aux-in might work with a Chromecast Audio for a portable solution... Not so much. I get a nasty ground loop using USB and aux in. It's not just the Chromecast Audio either, I get it with my phone too. Oh well, even at only about 200mA draw for the Chromecast Audio, 1800mAh wasn't likely to give me more than a few hours run time powering the Chromecast AND amplifying music playback. Update: I've had good luck powering the chromecast with a separate power bank battery for use around the house and outside. A ground loop isolator might solve the noise from the Brightech battery, but at some point it becomes not so compact and self contained. Oh well, it was worth a shot!Despite the off-label use attempt, I don't regret the purchase. The rest of this will be on the merits of the product, rather than my outside the box application (edit: and a rant about what can be fairly called 'bass'; TLDR: this thing, despite it's diminutive size and price truly rocks.)It has very decent sound and volume for the package size, which is just slightly larger and heavier than the Oontz Angle. The Oontz has a little more sweet sizzle on top, but this has slightly more fullness than the Oontz in the lower end. I'm not sure you can really call it bass (I'm a bass player, so I'm a stickler for these things). The specs state the low end range starts at 100hz, though I suspect the F3 is quite a bit higher (the point at which the low frequencies are half as loud, or 3db lower than the rest of the signal). So while it may be producing sound at 100hz, it just isn't very noticeable. I say this not because I'm disappointed, but rather because I feel the term "bass" is a bit liberally applied to products in this size and class. /rantAs for getting bass from small speakers, you may have heard the phrase, "there's no replacement for displacement" referring to large engine performance. That phrase generally applies well to speakers. There's only so much air a 1" driver can displace, and moving air is what generates sound; Lower frequencies require more of it to be moved. So you just need to realize you're not going to rattle pictures on the wall with something this size. However, the passive radiator (in the slot just below the top) seems to have been well thought out to get the most out of the little speakers in this size of package. At 3.7v, you're not going to get more than 2-3 watts of power out of even the most efficient class D amp chip, but the power seems to be about right for the speakers. The bottom line is, this thing moves about as much air as can be expected, especially at such a modest price. More expensive devices in the same size factor may appear to have "more bass", but it is likely because of clever application of DSP, filtering and EQ.Overall, this is an excellent compact Bluetooth speaker. It's worth consideration on price alone. But add in NFC pairing and the USB charging option, and it seems like an incredible bargain.

If it only had a BRAIN.....(smart charging)
Bought it and use it, but it lacks one important feature. You can charge it, or you can charge your phone from it, but to do both at the same time, requires 2 wall wart chargers. one to plug in the speaker and one to plug in the smartphone-tablet. even though the speaker has a plug to go to the smartphone-tablet, if the speaker has power, the smartphone-tablet port does not. As an electrical engineer, this is not rocket science to be able to share charging between the speaker and the source device. My application is to use it daily as my "alarm clock" set-up. It sets next to my bed on the night stand. It is plugged in all the time, meaning the internal battery is "topped off" when I go to bed, I bring my smart phone and have to plug it into another charger, so it gets charges. I then have a 3rd USB cable I would have to switch to if I want to run the phone off the speaker in the event of electricity failure in my home. I stream "Coast to Coast AM" at night even while I'm sleeping or trying to sleep. What I want is when I use the speaker every evening I want both it and my cell phone fully charged when I get up in the morning if my AC is good that night. I tried a more expensive blue tooth speaker and it did not have any better fidelity nor charging capability. In fact is was actually monaural (not stereo)
