Beyond Now

A disc of beautiful, moving, epic compositions. I "discovered" McCaslin and his group through the David Bowie Blackstar connection, so I was a bit wary about picking-up this disc. I shouldn't have been. Even without the Bowie-related compositions (both excellent, and as a longtime Bowie fan, hearing "A Small Plot of Land" re-done a la Blackstar is mind-boggling) the disc is both engaged and moving in many ways. A real treat.

Small wonder that David Bowie - who was no slouch himself on the sax - tapped him for his last album. The music and arrangements by Mr. McCaslin on this album hold together well thematically. You lucky cats in NoCal should check the man and his band out when he plays up there in mid-Feb. Jealous: cannot believe he has no SoCal dates! Namaste! - Taro

I have discovered so many fantastic musicians through Bowie. Donny McCaslin isn't called 'the best jazz man in New York' for nothing. Gripping stuff.
