Kirkwood a great songwriter
Curt Kirkwood has always given us a unique vernacular in his brand of songwriting, since the early '80's country-punk of the Meat Puppets (something that Kurt Cobain recognized & promoted). If you enjoyed the acoustic side of the Pups in "Coming Down" or "Shine" (from the Too High To Die LP) then you'll like this. Snow is a very gentle, poetic, even sweet, country-acoustic mix. Some of the songs have a very light touch, while "Box of Limes" stands out as a more aggressive toe-tapper. All the songs seem to have their own internal momentum that gathers force and releases energy, however subdued. And there's always little surprises in the lyrics. My only criticism is that Curt's voice sometimes sounds flat or off-key, but if you look past that you'll enjoy every song on the album as I do.

Just like snow settles on barbed wire
I grew up in Arizona. This, more than anything else I've ever heard, is Arizona music. Just like snow settles on barbed wire.

EVERY SONG ON THIS ALBUM PRETTY MUCH SOUNDS EXACTLY THE SAME
The reason this album has such a good rating, is because little indie snobs come here & think they're so cool & underground for liking albums like these, they'll give any indie album 4-5 stars just to look cool & feel like they fit inIndie people are funny... The idea is if it's not mainstream, it's good.. In actuality, the people here reviewing this album know it's not a very good album, they just give it a good rating to look "cool" & fit in, in an underground sense.. Just how when people like Green Day (who sucks) the same indie snobs who are sheep & will praise albums like this insult those people for "following the crowd", can anyone say "irony"?Indie cred doesn't save this album from songs that sound EXACTLY THE SAME... The only real song on this album that stands out & is decent is the song "In Bones", & even then it gets too repetitiveDon't take my word for it, listen to the samples, the songs are all mid-tempo acoustic country twang songs... Diversity is alien on this albumIt sounds like a cheap rip-off of Neil Young, I won't be listening to this album again.Consider this the only honest review this album has gotten thus far. I respect Curt Kirkwood, I just wish he wrote more than 1-2 songs for 'Snow'.

you know it's cool
blah, blah, blah, what i'm gonna say here on this valid comment on a album by an artist who used to be in a famous band that were the pioneers to the grunge explosion at the end of 1991 with kurdt donald cobain and his unique vision of morbid happyfreedom to be sloppy as long as it has a good sound kurdt donald cobain in my eyes and in many million's around the globe think he's a genius..but as commented this is a review on an album by a former member of an 80's physco-delic rock band the meat puppet'swhom nirvana covered on their unplugged with fellow puppeters in toe.this album is a beautiful, mellowed ballsy, and enlighting album, you can just imagine, dim light candles and a lingering fragance of a sweet lavender, in the air when you play this masterpiece[maybe it's my imagination gone wild]this is an cracking album filled to the brim with thoughtful melodies and hooks and a gentle and provoking voice plus an added bonus the lyrics are superb, this album has lots of different themes, that are not, just as simple as they seemcurt kirkwood is truly an talented artist and this solo album showcases he's true ablilty that brethen's any fleeting interest an listener has to, hear such gentle rain with sun beams play within confines of a compact disc,ROCK ON WITH BEAUTY MAN!!!!!!!!! this ain't no lake of fire, you've been imersed in the flames now it's time for the after thought

beauty and magic!
MIRAGE realy showed us where the heart and soul was. this new record continues the focus on the elements: rain, wind, fire, water, all elemental organic magic movers in kurt's world of wonderful stuff. !!! a beautiful and hearty, earthy and magical mixture! it just FEELS really good, and the musicianship is coming from that special place that gave us Buffalo Springfield's first album and Gene Clark's best moments. a true jem of poetry and spirit. every track is special. they GROW on you!!! one day you have a favorite song that haunts you . then it's replaced by another. the songs play over and over in your head , and you know the magic is real. this is folk-country roots performed with ease of accoustic and gentle electronics, with mandolin, peddle steel, soft drums, other sounds from instruments unworldly ,and wonderful guitar and beautiful harmony vocals. i tried to edit my original 4 star review to a 5 star, but , anyway , it's a 5 star. the 4 star was because i wanted MORE peddle-steel. now, i realise that this cd is so good, that it doesn't matter.

Surrealistic Poetry
However abrasive his presentation Pearl Jam's 'Lion' does have a point, all the tunes on this album are pretty homogenous. Despite Kirkwood's status as a guitar hero, largely deserved in my not so humble opinion, I think it should be acknowledged that his truest talent is in writing poety of the surrealistic variety. On that level he succeeds admirably with this alubm and as such it is worth a shekel or so. In addition, the album cover features llamas which those in the know understand are the coolest species to inhabit the earth.

Hyperbole! Superlatives!
This is a hard review to write. Not because I don't know what to think about the album. I do: it's amazing. Rather, there's the question of who the review is for. Presumably long-term Puppets fans knew they were going to buy this record before they'd heard a note of it. I'm in that camp. But most likely, the vast majority of folks who've never heard the band (or only know Backwater from the heady days of "grunge rock") won't even know it's been released. So rah rah my brothers and sisters. You're spending your money wisely.Opinions are like twigs in the fur of a dancing chimp. Just remember that.
