Ideal book for the new "coin shooter"
This book is a thorough, yet easily understood, introduction to metal detecting. The author appropriately includes helpful, step-by-step advice on how to research your first purchase. He explains the major features of typical units, and why those features matter to you (or why some features may interest you more than others). There's a discussion of new versus used units, as well as a checklist you can use to narrow your decision. The author walks you through the basics of how metal detectors work. There's some science involved, but truly, it will help you to grasp the basic principles. In fact, the author notes that "you WILL be gaining scientific knowledge" regarding weather, soil types, biology, physics, and electronics - and shows why, and where, this knowledge will help you find the 'loot.'The discussion on digging tools is good, too, as well as other supplies you should bring along. (Kneepads? Well, yeah.)The remainder of the book is dedicated to researching where to hunt. The number-one rule of this hobby is to "Search where lots of people have walked" - places where people congregate, both now and in the past. The tips include comparing current and old maps to find unexplored areas, perusing historical newspapers, seeking out old fair grounds and even just asking the locals where the old farms were. It's a bounty of good advice, and especially useful once you move beyond your town to unfamiliar areas. This is the second edition of Vince Migliore's book, which - as explained in the product description - means an expanded discussion of Internet resources. This is also useful, though truthfully if you have basic research skills, you can find much of it yourself.Time is money; this book will definitely help you make the most of your time - and, once you've got some experience, find the money.

Very helpful
This book is great. It offers great advice, tips and suggestions on how to use and where to use your metal detector. It lost a star with me only because I didn't need the information on which metal detector to buy as I already own one ... But, if you're in the market for one, this book would be a one-stop-shop for all the research you need to do before you buy.Oh yea, the kindle version does have some formatting issues ... All the apostrophes are quotation marks. Some of the paragraphs are combined ... Little pet peeve stuff like that. ;)

Can't go Wrong buying this one... =)
I am new to the metal detecting hobby. After spending three laborious days searching for information to read and watching plenty of videos I decided to buy this book. It was nice to have some knowledge on the subject, but I would have saved myself allot of work had I just bought this book from the beginning. It has plenty of information pertaining to the selection and understanding of your first metal detector. It gives plenty of tips and many places to to continue your research. Many references to the detectors of today and mentions some from the past. It goes over all the subjects I could think of and then some. I found it to go about the critical information in several different angles to ensure all readers could understand it.I love this book and now I know what metal detector to buy and exactly why!!I already have scoped out sites to dig thanks to this book and YES! I DID FIND COINS IN MY OWN BACK YARD!Being that I am a beginner I feel confident to recommend it to beginners. As to more advanced users... I will have to read it again a year or two from now to be able to give my opinion, lol.Hope this helps, good luck and happy hunting!CP

Anyway… this book was a great book, Thanks.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, written in a flowing, "easy to read" manner, with a large font size. The author is not writing about something he has not experienced. I also enjoyed another Metal detecting book “Metal Detector: Guidebook, by Steve Cormier” his book covered many unanswered questions I had. Anyway… this book was a great book, Thanks.

Okay but a bit light in contents
I am interested in Metal detecting indeed. I have not yet launched myself in it though.I was hoping this book would help me make my mind up.It did not although it gave me plenty of useful info, I ended up somehow unsatisfied. The book gives lots of technical tips but where it fails in my opinion is to convince me that I am not going to waste a lot of time and money going for it. It does not really answer why the range of price is so large between detectors. Should I be ok with a $100 one or should I go straight to the $1500 one? What is the history of metal detecting? Did anyone strike rich while doing it with a real treasure? So, the book tells you the how fairly well but does not tell you the why or more specifically why not.

Lots of Info that a beginer will want to know!!
This book exceeds my expectations, it cover everything that a beginner or even an intermediate user wants to know about when purchasing and it even covers locations where you will have the best luck for finding those hidden treasures. I could not believe the amount of helpful information that is in this book, and for this price, it is a steal. It provides references on where to find the best maps for your searching locations, and it even instructs you on what kind of metal detector you are looking for by what you want to search for. It is a must buy!!

Good gift for new metal detecting hobbiest.
I purchased the book for my son who received a metal detector for Christmas. The book was easy to read (even for my son) and gave us some great tips to get started. However a good portion of the book covers the features and uses of many different models and describes how to purchase a metal detector to fit your personal needs. Since we already had a detector a lot of the book did not benefit us.

Great Information for both the novice and seasoned detector.
I am a novice metal detector and this book is excellent for getting me started in this hobby. I have talked with several people who go metal detecting, but even their advice doesn't cover half the beneficial things that Vince Migliore covers in his instructional book. I definitely recommend it for novice as well as seasoned detectors.

Metal Detecting. Good for beginners
This book is ok for beginners but does not go much past this point. The book focussed on American areas to locate civil war and other locations.

A Worthy Read, Even For The Experienced
This book focuses your attention on what metal detecting is really about. Of course there is no better teacher than experience, but the contents of this book are able to fast track the novice who really wants to succeed. There are a lot of prompts in the book that are worth revisiting no matter how experienced you maybe.
