The deeply yearning folk music of Portugal found it's greatest ambassador in Amalia Rodrigues. Here are 4 CDs of her best (Carmencita; Los Piconeros; Troca de Olhares; a Tendinha; Sardinheiras; Grito; Com Que Voz; Cansaco; Fallaste Corazon; Lisboa Antigua) plus Cantares Madalena de Melo; Fado Corrido Maria Emelia Ferreira; Desgarrada Maria Do Carmo; Tia Macheta Berta Cardoso; Fado Fadista Maria Silva, and more!

THE PORTUGUESE BLUES; THESE ARE OLD RECORDINGS BUT OK QUALITY
The fifth cd called The History of Fado consists of singers probably earlier than Amalia. There are no liner notes. But the Fado on this cd could be from very old recordings. I looked up some of the singers and they go back to 1920 and earlier.Altho the new "Queens of Fado" are fantastic and have revived appreciation of Fado and Amalia, the old recordings show how timeless and relatively unchanging this music is.I have better old Fado recordings however. But most seem to be from the 50s to 70s. These could be much earlier as I say.The ones by Amalia on the other 4 cds seem also to be older too. She first recorded in1946 through the 1970s,But she created the highly expressive style that typifies the new singers, most of who are beautiful young women like she was..Fado is a music full of reflection more than melancholy, as is often thought.Born of the ports of Portugal where young men took the risks required of a seafaring nation for centuries. And their women longed for their return. My friends grew up in the Rock and Roll era and tend towards the blues idiom.None of them ever heard of Fado but all are moved when I play this great music, often called the "Portuguese Blues".

Beautiful and Pure
Even though I have no idea of the meaning of the words, it brings me to tears to hear her music from the soul. She sings with such a clear emotional voice it doesn't need to be translated. Even my son thought it was beautiful. I can play it for hours.

The two disc version is an Ace combo - and a bargain
This two disc version combines a complete disc-full of Amalia Rodriques - the greatest performer of Fado - as well as being crucial to Fado's development and it's place in the worldwide history of music. The second disc is full of an amazing selection of some of the other great Fado performers. The recordings are good too - not the depth or detail of those made on modern equipment, but I'm sure that the oldest recordings have been remastered so that they're clean and musical.Listening pleasure - that only grows. Now to save up for a Coimbra Guitarra...

Amália Rodrigues's music: a nice variety, not just fado.
These five CD's with Amália Rodrigues's music cover a whole variety of songs, not just the Portuguese fado, but also other things which at times sound Italian or South-American in origin. Still I preferred the 5th CD, with the fado music. On the whole I liked these CD's a lot. There is indeed quite a nice variety of muscic on them. I bought these CD's to get an idea of Portuguese music, prior to going to Portugal on holiday.

Very good for fado lovers
This selection highlights the range of one of the most famous fado singers ever. If you love fado, you will like this. The songs were evidently recorded some considerable time ago, so perhaps do not sound so fresh as newer recordings by modern artists, but that is not a drawback for me.

Memorable
A fabulous CD, wonderful music & singing, takes us right back to a atmospheric restaurant in Madeira where we listened to a family group. Brilliant value, we are only recent converts to the gorgeous sound of Fado, but this CD is just wonderful.
