These transfer pencils work very well
These pencils feel exactly like Prismacolors in the way they apply to paper. First draw out your design with a regular pencil the exact size you want on filler paper or any other thinnish paper. Next, flip it over and tape it onto any window where it's sunny. Now trace over the design (it will appear backwards) with this transfer pencil. Just go over it with one pass lightly for now. Remove tape and return to your desk or table and place your design, again face down, on the table. Now, using the pencil, go back over your lines you traced several more times to build up a nice heavy (not necessarily thick) line. I went over each line in my lettering about five times and pressed only moderately hard each time so as not to break the point. It does build layers. You can sharpen the pencil with an x-acto knife if you need to refine the point. Once you have a good heavy line place the design with the red line side face down on the item you are going to transfer the design onto. Now your original pencil lines should be face up and the design should appear normal. Pin in place around edges and re-measure just to make sure the design is exactly where you want it. Now using a dry iron, place iron on the design, or on portions of it. About 20 seconds does the trick; use the iron several times over each area. It works better if you place the iron down rather than sliding it around, to prevent the paper from possibly sliding around. You can peek under one corner to see if it has transferred OK. Then remove pins (they might still be hot, so careful!) and lift up design. Your pattern should be transferred. Now I am ready to embroider. My dish towel will say, "Alexa, wash the dishes."

didn't seem to transfer very well, may have used the wrong kind of fabric
tried several times to transfer, even 'remarked' the lines & still didn't seem to help

Wonderful design transfer pencils!
Transferring an embroidery design onto heavy linen takes ingenuity. This type of linen doesn't work well on a light box or most tracing papers. Thus, I needed a transfer pen which could be ironed onto the linen. I tried the Sulky transfer pens, but a test piece showed me that the lines became much thicker when ironed onto linen. So, back I went to Amazon to find a different pen for the job. Here, I came across these inexpensive red pencils by Aunt Martha. When they arrived, I followed the simple instructions (flip the design over and draw - BACKWARDS! - over the design, then iron it on. My test showed a perfect transfer onto the linen, although the lines were paler than with the Sulky pens. But...the lines remained thin enough to cover with embroidery, without having any of the lines show. Also, these lines are erasable with a regular pencil eraser - from the paper or the linen - in case you make a mistake! What wonderful tools these pencils are for any embroiderer! They worked perfectly for me.

Great product!! Here are some tips for use. :)
I had noticed on some of the 1-star reviews that people were saying the lead in the pencils runs out too fast/breaks too easy/ doesnt sharpen well and I wanted to address that. The lead in these feels similar to that of a Prismacolor pencil, you cant press hard or it will eat your pencil up. You gotta be patient and press lightly, go over it repeatedly until its as dark as you'd like. That being said, these are wonderful for their purpose! I wouldnt reccomend them if you expect super fine lines on transfer, as it melts to the shirt and thickens just a bit. But if you've got even a shred of artistic ability, you can go over it with your paint the thickness that you'd like and just wash the excess red away! You want to use a handheld non-electric sharpener for these, or the lead crumbles. When you sharpen, make sure to move ONLY the sharpener while holding the pencil steady in the other hand. (This is because we tend to unintentionally wobble the pencil around when we move it instead of the sharpener, causing uneven sharpening and breakage).Happy tracing, everyone!! π

Works on light weight fabric
They didn't work on a canvas bag, which is what I wanted them for. They do work on light weight, light colored fabric.

Hilarious humor on the packaging
The thing I love the most about these red transfer pencils is the hilarious packaging! It specifically says that βthe lead in these pencils are soft. If you want the pencil to be more firm, put it in the freezer for harder lead.β Every man in the world needs this advice! The lead in their pencil needs to be put in the freezer to harden. Thanks for the laughs!

Useless!
These pencils are useless. The points break off at the slightest pressure. If you don't apply some pressure, the mark doesn't transfer. Terrible product.
