How wide does the clip open? I'd like to attach this to a shelf above my monitor.

About 3/4" to 1"... but i highly do not recommend you get this. Its very cheap and not worth it. Get a convex mirror that you can use double stick tape with, the image you see is much greater than this flimsy flat mirror.

Yes as long as it's thin. In my opinion though the mirror is too small and the clip is flimsy. Mine fell off the computer hit my desk and broke apart. I threw it away. Hope this helps with your decision.
