Do other silly string cans fit in this or do you have to purchase the refills?

You have to buy the original product, no other cans will fit. It is a total rip off since the cans are over $7.00

Does it fit an 8-year-old?

Yes. My 7 year old is of above average height and it fit her fine.

Do you just refill the canister with water? Or is there a separate water container?

The canister in the shooter pictured is what you fill with water. You switch that out for the silly string when you want to use the silly string
