Good value for the price
I purchased this without a lot of information on what I was getting into. It seems that there are reviews mixed together under this product. I purchased this NVR about a month ago for the 8 Zmodo cameras that I have around my home. I took me up to now to get comfortable with its function and reliability. I have been going through rounds of testing and positioning cameras to get the system functioning predictably. For the price and convenience, this is suitable for a basic monitoring capability around the home. The most important consideration for an implementation is a STRONG Wi-Fi signal for all cameras. I purchased a set of 15” antennas for my Zmodo cameras that I found on eBay. That helped one of my cameras get better Wi-Fi reception and record predictably. The NVR MUST be hooked directly to the same router that your cameras are linked to. With all your cameras having a good link to your router, the NVR will function well and record reliably. The documentation that comes in the box is useless. You will need to do a google search for the DVR/NVR documentation that resides on the Funlux website. There are two ways to review your camera recordings; though the phone apps (zModo or Funlux) or through a monitor hooked directly to the NVR via HDMI cable and a USB mouse. The direct hook up option works well and gives you a lot of control in reviewing your recordings such as the ability to zoom in on the timeline to easily see motion areas marked in orange. You can also set the parameters around how you want to manage storage. I chose the intelligent storage option that has an algorithm to optimize recordings. These look a bit jumpy when no motion is detected but are solid when motion is present. Since you are directly looking at the hard drive, there is no lag and the playback and control is good. Using the phone apps provides basic ability to review recordings with only orange marks highlighting areas of motion without the ability to zoom. Here are observations from my working with this system:The Funlux NVR is compatible with both Zmodo and Funlux cameras.Location, location, location! Your cameras must have solid Wi-Fi reception or you will have lots of problems recording. It seems this requirement becomes more critical with NVR than without. Wi-Fi doesn’t like garage doors, refrigerators, water heaters, HVAC, masonry and interference from other signals. Keep your cameras as close to your router as possible and be conscious of any barriers that the signal may encounter between camera and router. Make sure your router is not blocked by furniture, TVs, computers or other obstructions. It is not too clear from the documentation if linking your cameras to Wi-fi extenders with the NVR hooked to a router will work. It looks like Zmodo wants to sell you their Beam product to do that. I read many mixed reviews about the Beam so decided to stick to just using my router as the single link point for all cameras. The Zmodo cameras are notorious for not managing motion detection reliably. After some observation, I believe it’s the generation of an alert and the recording of the short clip by the camera that is not reliable. The recording of motion on the NVR is VERY reliable. I am able to account for all motions around my cameras after reviewing the NVR recording. However, these motions are not always picked up as an alert for display in the app.The documentation states that the NVR will not record 1080 video but only 720. I have one 1080 Zmodo camera on my network and it is recording. Maybe it’s just recording 720 resolution, but it does record on the NVR.Unlike the short clip that the app creates, you cannot download or edit short clips using the NVR feed. I can just use my phone’s camera to take a screenshot pic of a particular freeze pane image. The cameras require firmware updates regularly. This is the price of an evolving product. You just have to check them regularly in the settings area in the app to catch these as there are no notifications. Before installing the NVR, all the cameras appeared in a list on the Zmodo app. With the NVR installed, there is only the NVR icon that you click on to review the live or recorded views. It’s a different user experience, but I got used to it after a while.Bottom line: For the price, this is a home security system that meets my needs. You can place a lot of cameras around your property without spending a lot of money. The NVR adds the capability to review activity in more detail. The use of Wi-Fi limits its reliability and scalability in larger areas. For larger homes or commercial application, a wired system would be preferred.

READ THIS REVIEW!
I bought this system May 29, they arrived June 1. The box was neatly laid out with the cams. I was impressed with the build quality, metal housings and mounts. The process to set up was fairly painless, though the lack of a decent manual was glaring. However using the Funlux app on my Samsung phone I was able to get things going in short order. The motion detection seemed to work well too, this would give you 5 snapshots in a 5 second spread. However it would be several minutes before this would "reset" and be able to trip again. Now for the crummy part. These are advertised as 720 P HD cams, but the photos captured are not. Photos captured by the motion detection are only 240 P (320 x 240). The photos are tiny, blurry and not much good for getting an ID of someone peering into your home.IF, however, I take a manual snapshot via my android phone, THAT photo will come out as 720 P (1280 x 720). Frustrating!I want 720 P for all photos taken! Period. Also take note, the Funlux phone app would not stay in HD mode. I used the Zmodo app (basically the same thing) and HD mode would then stick. But the photos of the motion captured photos was still low def. I worked all day on this glaring problem to no solution. I am currently in contact with support, and I will give this a day or two but I most likely will send these back. I want to like these cameras, but false advertising is unacceptable. I have very fast cable internet. I will look into my router for issues also. Some kind of decent manual would be of great help! There is none provided anywhere. One other problem is the lack of any video controls for brightness and contrast. When the sun is out, anyone standing under a covered porch is going to be in the shade and blacked out. Also the cloud service is non-existent beyond basic viewing.UPDATE JUNE 3, 2017;Yesterday I experimented with the motion detection and alert system. I turned off the wifi for my phone, then tripped the camera. I am pleased to say that the push notification came quickly over the cellular network. Now for the bad.I have received an email from Funlux, they offer only apologizes and ask for "my patience" in regards to the cloud server with no suggestions, explanations or help. After thinking about things, some truths became apparent to me.#1, Sending video to the cloud and then back to your phone/computer takes up bandwidth. For a free service I can understand the streaming video to be heavily compressed (compression of video and pictures causes more pixelation), It is obvious to me that Funlux/Zmodo may also be overwhelmed with traffic and unable to keep up with demand. One of my buying decisions is based on buyer feedback. I read things like "crystal clear", or "sharp image". These comments are in the March/April range. Another buyer complained that his video degraded since he bought his system, then it hit me that the algorithms used for compression were stepped up to deal with traffic. The video/photos I get are anything but "crystal clear". But to degrade a picture from a motion event from 720 p down to 240 p negates any chance to identify who is in the picture.#2 I would expect less than perfect video for a free service, and would happily pay for a better cloud server experience, one that would step up the resolution of pictures. I am uneasy that this system is not up and running and I have no guarantees that this will ever work right. I had assumed that the reason for the cameras being so inexpensive is the business model of paying for monthly cloud support. But it's not there.I have included 3 photos. The first one is me, using my phone, to take a manual photo. It is at 720 p resolution, though you can see the heavy compression, it is fairly clear enough to see what I look like. The second two photos show the problem with video gain when in the shadow, and the one of me tripping the motion detection, I was less than 15 feet away, impossible to even see what I look like.I really want to like these cameras and am on the fence on what to do. Do I wait to see if the cloud actually gets up and going? I will give this a few days but I am leaning on sending these back for a more "in house" solution.UPDATE JUNE 4, 2017In reading messages from Funlux Support to another Amazon customer about these cameras, it was said that the cloud will be up in a "few months". This was only a few days old message. That is the deal killer for me. Too bad, could of been a nice deal but for the cloud server and resolution issues. I have decided to send these cameras back. Thank you Amazon for you no hassle return policy!
