Mazda MX-5 Miata 1.6

When I ordered this excellent and easy to follow manual I did not realize that it was meant for the only NA6 Miata - the Miata with the 1,6 liter engine. (Moss Motors advertises only this manual in their catalog, not the 1.8, although they do offer it online) These Miatas were built for the 1990 - 93 years I believe (there may have been some overlap). My car is an NA8, '95 with the 1.8 liter engine. For the most part this manual would have been adequate for my model but I have since discovered the workshop manual for the 1.8 and have ordered that one just to be safe. I have read this manual and have found it to be quite detailed and thorough in its explanation of steps and procedures. I have already made use of the advise found in the earlier chapters. This manual covers everything from a simple oil change to a transmission rebuild to installation of a new wiring harness or timing belt and more. It makes these jobs seem doable enough for even someone like me to take on. Hmmmm. I've always wanted a six speed tranny to replace my five. This is an essential reference to have on hand for when you have to solve and/or fix some unexpected problem.

Manual is good - but could be GREAT!
This is a well written manual. I've used it for several deep dives into my engine and dismantled parts of the interior to repair the heating system with confidence. If I were writing manuals like this, I'd be reluctant to go back in and tinker with an apparent winner. However, there are questions that could have been anticipated. There are logical leaps that could have been spanned better. The main change, however, that would take this manual to "great" would be some attention to how the images print. They're good, illustrative images, but they print much too dark on the paper used. This often obscures important image details that someone with more courage than knowledge could use to ensure he's doing the procedures right.Couple this manual with the Haynes manual, and you can take on any repair to your MX-5.

Great book, but has some errors
I built a custom car based on the Miata skate. This book was a my bible for the Miata suspension, electrical system, and drivetrain. However, I found that some of the page cross-references were not correct and a handful of the torque settings are wrong. It's also unfortunate that much of the electrical section is dedicated to diagnostics of the ECU and is described with the assumption that you have the proper - extremely expensive - Mazda diagnostic tools; which even the author acknowledges most people will not have access to.

Better than Haynes but it's still lacking.
Much better than Haynes. But some of the pictures give you no reference point to where the bolt they want you to take off is. Also, if your looking to do some engine repair, good luck. Because they only show you how to take apart the WHOLE engine AFTER its taken out of the car. I figured out after studying the section for awhile what I needed to do to repair the head gasket. All in all it's MUCH MUCH better than Haynes. But it could be better.

Should be very useful.
Haven't had a chance to use it, yet, but have read a few sections. It's an entertaining read and seems to be complete enough to accomplish most repairs. Geared toward the back yard mechanic, it doesn't use terms you may not be familiar with or make assumptions about your expertise. I think I will find it very useful. I rented it from the library before buying, so I knew what to expect. The fact that I went ahead and purchased it should be an endorsement.

Very nice manual, but too expensive
Nice book. Just go it today. Only thumbed thru it. But looks like I'm going to like it. It's for the common man. Not a MIT GradOK. I've had a little time to read and look it over. This book is OK, but it is too much $$. Take a look around for other Tech manuals that may be just as good for a lot less money. This doesn't mean this is not a good book.....just too expensive. But I am keeping mine.

Well Written Manual Packed With Photos
I've had this manual for the past year and it has helped me four times to fix my Miata. The directions for disassembling are very clear and there are many photos which walk you through the steps. There is no way I could have made some of the repairs without this manual. The photos are black & white, but that does not affect their clarity or usefulness. If you have an old Miata, this manual is highly recommended.

What to expect in terms of price and coverage. ...
What to expect in terms of price and coverage. Had a difficult problem with a horn relay and the Miata manual was helpful in tracking down the over-stressed relay after I had put in a heavy-duty horn. (Cute, but no road runner "meep-meep" for me!)

Tons of detail
Hasn't led me wrong so far, having done a head gasket change and some suspension work so far. Is UK-centric but does have some details for cars from other markets. If you back it up with pointers and general assistance from the MX5 forums on the web, you will have enough information to do a complete teardown, renovation and rebuild. Not the most amazing for troubleshooting - I don't think it offers a lot of assistance for identifying likely circuits for electrical faults; there are testing guides and specifications for everything but you'd have to take entire circuits apart and test everything to narrow it down from the entire car to specific areas. While this is often the nature of the beast for electrical faults, some more pointers would be helpful.

Essential.
Own a mk1/NA Mazda MX5 or Miata? Then you need this book. Simple as that but Amazon dictate I need to write me!Clear, concise and very well written. Save a fortune by doing basic jobs yourself using this and basic tools, and also use this guide to decide if the job is out of your comfort zone for a garage to do instead.

Useful Manual for Most jobs
This is a good down to earth manual which should help with most tasks that a DIY mechanic can tackle. There are odd things missed out usually related to body and trim but it's a very minor point. The big omission is regrettably a wiring diagram, but you are unlikely to find this in any manual at this price. It's good value and I'd recommend it.

Good book but not the easiest to navigate
This book covers most maintenance for an MX5 although not the easiest to navigate and some of the diagrams are not clear - but combined with the internet it's enabled me to solve everything I've needed to

Five Stars
Excellent reference source, but I was impressed by the prompt delivery and careful packaging of the item. Great.
