Family favorite
This is one of my favorite read-aloud, bedtime books. It is both gentle and imaginative. Perfect for little dreamers!

How to deal with fear
I read an article in the New Yorker where a person explained how this book helps this person to speak English . My daughter and I love it.

A Special Favourite
This lovely book was a special favourite of my children 30 years ago and was very worn when it became the book of choice for my then two and a half year old grand-daughter. So I was I was very happy when I found I could buy a replacement. Whilst the story of a little boy who finds a lion in the meadow is the same, this edition has more detailed and beautiful illustrations which, along with the stretch in imagination, really appeal to my now 3 year old.

Lovely story
My son received this book as a gift when he was 3 and he absolutely fell in love with it. We read it so often he could recite most pages verbatim! Very sweet books for younger children.

Magical book.
This is wonderful, magical book. The images created in the reader's mind merge perfectly with our childhood fantasies of bringing wildlife indoors.

This is a great story, adventure, repetition, imagination. Perfect for 2-5 years
Loved this book when my own kids were little, and they loved it too. Now it is in a bigger format and has different pictures, so don't love that. Hence docking a star. It was nice to be able to carry it in a bag before, and why change the artist? Am sad that a classic has gone, a bit like changing pics for The Tiger Who came to Tea.... Not cool. But grandson won't know, so I'm trying to get over myself!

Original illustrations
I bought this copy because it has the original illustrations (which I remembered from a child). The last lines are also different from the one currently in print. We now have both versions, both illustrated by Jenny William. They look quite different, but both are beautiful, and young and old in this house like both. Margaret Mahy is a genius. I highly recommend this book to anyone with children from about 18months and older.

A true classic
Al three of our children loved this story, and now our grandson is enjoying it too. Deceptively simple, with Margaret Mahy's wonderful use of language and a quotable final sentence.

A classic
A wonderful tale for children and adults reading to them. The pictures are different from the original version but beautiful and full of detail for discussion. There's a bit added to the end of the story in case your imagination can't think up how things happen in the end. Highly recommended.

Fantastic!
Margaret Mahy is one of the great writers for children. Sadly missed. As a teacher, my 7 year olds always enjoyed this book and my almost 3 year old grandson has a great treat coming. Fantasy in a domestic setting with gorgeous illustrations!
