Review: Gives a general insight and great for beginners to understand. Review: This book is a great introduction to modern front-end web design. It takes a broad high level view, shows you major components used in modern web design and shows you how the pieces fit together. I found this perspective to be very useful. it takes the main elements of wed design and jumps in just enough to get you started in each area. You will want to get other books/resources to help you dive deeper into the various areas of web design that catch your interest. For example, there are many books that dive much deeper into JavaScript and DOM. There are entire books dedicated to HTML5/CSS3 which I would recommend if you want to move past Bootstrap. That said, I strongly recommend this book to anyone learning web design, whether you're new to it, or jumping back into it after stepping away for a while. This book lives up to everything it promises and not much more- making it a quick concise tour guide as you learn web development.

Short version: this book is a waste of paper and your time. "Create a website that displays correctly and functions accurately" is just the first of many claims this book fails to cram into a scant 256 A5 pages. Yet it also has room for a "How to read a book" section, and a chapter on Unix commands that a modern, let alone beginner, web designer will never need. No index, though. Nearly all of the illustrations are images of some text; a pity, then that most use colour - in a book that is printed black and white. Not a single diagram. Confusing and repetitive text, detailed where it's unnecessary / vague where some explanation would help. Code examples aren't indented for readability and are ham-fistedly line-wrapped with hyphens! Would a beginner know to remove a hyphen from the middle of a DOM property name? Acronyms and terms regularly introduced without definition. Reading this book would probably be a setback for a beginner, and is not going to help an experienced developer advance either.

This book provides an overview of the elements used in web design and how they interact, but short on the details a “beginner” needs. The book dedicates only 25 pages to HTML, compared to another book I bought that devoted 200 pages to HTML with plenty of detailed examples. To me a beginner knows little about the subject at hand, i.e. web design, and would find it very difficult to design a web page using this book.
