For the YOUNGER reader who may enjoy the world of Calpurnia Tate, but has not read the novels
This book is meant for the younger reader (definitely more towards the 1st-2nd grade level rather than 5th grade). We read _The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate_ and _The Curious World of Calpurnia Tate_ prior to this new book from the same author. This book focuses on two of the most-beloved characters from the CT novels, Calpurnia and her younger brother Travis. At only 112 pages (versus over 300 for the novels), Kelly writes a simple story about the misadventures of Travis after he discovers what he thinks is a kitten. You can probably guess what happens next from the title of the book. My 9 year old daughter enjoyed it, but not nearly as much as the original two novels. She just can't seem to get enough of Calpurnia's world!

Awesome read!
I help with a school completion called Battle of the Books, and this is one of the books on the list. Trying to be frugal, I purchased the 3 least expensive books on the list and plan to check the rest out from the library. I fell in love with this book from the beginning. Calpurnia and her little brother are truly wonderful characters. The book is set in the early 1900s, so there is no technology to keep the youngest 2 Tate's busy. Instead, they spend their time in nature; Calpurnia observing and becoming a scientist while her younger brother rescues lost or injured animals. When he finds a baby skunk, the real adventure begins.I can't wait to read the rest of the books in the series. My "frugal" purchase has lead to a great series. I can't wait for my girls to get old enough to enjoy Calpurnia Tate.

My 6-yo loves it!
My 6yo is reading this to me, and it's juuuuuust hard enough to be challenging but not so hard that she's struggling (I'll note: she reads at a 1st/2nd grade level). Super cute book, lots of girl power, and lots of animals, so it's a win! She loves learning about "the olden days" too.

We wanted to love this series, but we don't
My under-10 daughters and I are huge book lovers, and I heard about this book series and was excited-- girl vet? science? inquisitive girl who is bucking 1900s stereotypes/expectations? animals? Awesome! What's not to love?Except that we've now read 4 of the 5 books, and we really don't like them. For one, the stories just fall flat. They aren't that interesting. Further, Calpurnia seems like kind of a jerk. She also doesn't even seem to like animals? All she does is complain about whatever animal she is taking care of. Additionally, she's unkind to her younger brother Travis, who is a tender-hearted animal lover, and she calls him names (idiot, etc.) and actually says in one book "he cries all of the time... what can you even do with a boy like that?" Just... gross misogynistic/toxically masculine attitude to have in a book that is supposed to be about a smart girl.Don't recommend this series at all. There are so many better books out there-- don't waste time on these.

Just an all around great book!
A second great book about my new favorite girl hero. Written with humor and understanding of the inside of a pre-teen girl head. I hope that more books will be forthcoming! I bought this copy for my granddaughter to read during the quarantine.

Good historical fiction children’s book
My 8 year old daughter read this book for her historical fiction book report. She loved the main characters and enjoyed reading about the animal adventures. She wants to read the other books in the series!
