the standard
timeless classic in Elizabethan English. This is the definitive version of the iliad for the english speaking people. The language has been described as brutal and barbaric, but this is the nature of war. Any attempt to smooth out the language or make it more palatable to the modern reader would be dishonest. Chapman's translation is an honest translation in that it correctly portrays the nature of the subject.
