Schrodt Designs Model HBL-C Crystal Hummingbird Feeder

I like this hummingbird feeder. It is not plastic. and it is not made in China. Its made in the US and has a nice shape and look. I live in the woods and seldom see a hummingbird, and with the feeder not being red, I had my doubts about it attracting any hummers. However, within one day I had a humming bird frequenting it!! and within a month I now have 3 hummers coming to it. I will say it doesn't hold much liquid. Only 1 & 1/2 cups. But since I dont have alot of hummingbirds, that actually is a plus, as they eat up the food in 3 days- which is then time to clean it out anyway, so there is no waste. I'm not convinced this feeder will last more than a few years, but, neither do the nasty plastic feeders, so I've got no complaints. Also, the design is good, it does not leak or drip. All in all, a nice feeder.

For reasons only a hummingbird could tell you, they love these feeders. I've tried many others and they just don't attract the hummers like these. I really wish the design would allow for the metal feeder piece to seal at the edges better, too much water gets in during a hard rain. Another issue is the base tends to crack after 2 or 3 years so I keep replacing them. The final problem is that I am really not sure when I buy a replacement if I'm actually getting a Schrodt or a knockoff on the Amazon site. It's hit or miss. I bought two this year, the other one is orange glass, the base and top are of a different wood and are constructed a little differently, doesn't appear to be as sturdy and didn't have a Schrodt label. BTW, the hummers seem to like the clear glass version better than the colored ones. And the glass is easy to clean with a small bent bottle brush.Update 2018: I bought a new one that is not OK. During the heat of the day when the sugar water is pulled into the base, it leaks over the sides of the base. I've requested a replacement or refund.

I ordered this feeder to replace one exactly like it that had been a gift but which we'd accidentally broken. It is both elegant and effective--I saw a hummingbird take 30 consecutive hits on a similar feeder just last night. When you order it, however, be sure to specify the feeder with the narrow top cap and metallic bottom plate. We received the HBL-C feeder by mistake which is like this one, but is wider on top and has a thicker predominantly wood bottom. Unfortunately this feeder does not have a similar easily discernible model number. The HBL-C is nice but this is nicer and a little more expensive usually, though not always.

Beware...when these were made back in the 80's and 90's by Mr. Schrodt they were a work of art. This is a piece of junk. Had a rusted nut that actually came in direct contact with the liquid feed and leaked from the very start. This is a cheap knock off of what at one time was a TRULY QUALITY WORK OF ART. Don't waste your money no matter how nice it looks in the pictures. They are living off a name and a quality product of the past. SHAME on them and shame on you if you fall for it like I did!

I was disappointed when I got this, it looked a bit cheaper than I imagined. When I put it outside it immediately began to rust. I live in California and it didn't even stand up to the elements (or lack of!) here. On top of it, the hummingbirds in my backyard preferred the generic ugly red plastic feeder to this one!

I bought this feeder last year. It has a nice contemporary look to it, compared to other feeders. Easy to clean & fill. I use clear nectar, rather than the red stuff (have read that the dye is bad for the little hummers) and it attracts plenty of hummingbirds. If this feeder ever breaks, I would definitely buy another one. Highly recommended.

OUTSTANDING Product, solid glass, colored or clear, will keep the color of 15 years +. EASY to clean, gorgeous to look at, having 5 of them over time, as the are BEAUTIFUL !!!

These are great looking feeders, I have purchased three of these for myself and as gifts. I would highly recommend these for anyone looking for a great looking feeder.
