This is a nor-retractable knife. If it's on the bench there's no need for a sheath, but to carry it handily you will need a sheath - I make mine. The reasons for using a non-retractible knife are: 1) the blade is more firmly fixed than a retractable blade and will not wiggle as much, nor accidentally retract. 2) pull it out of the sheath and it's ready to do its job. Granted this only saves a few seconds - but after a series of cuts time adds up, your thumb is spared repetitive stress and your pocket isn't worn out. This knife holds the blade incredibly firmly - zero wiggle play in the blade for reliable cuts. Truly impressive in that feature. Irwin comes up with some novel ideas for improving blades. My knife came with snap-off points. A single blade gives you 4 points/edges. This knife uses a phillips/flat head screw to keep its shells together, so the 4-in-one blades keep you from having to pull out the screwdriver (or dime) as often or load up the blade reservoir. The screw has a retainer so it won't fall out and get lost while changing blades- nice. The blade reservoir uses a clip to hold the blades. Not the best feature. I'm not sure what the maximum capacity is for spare blades, but 3 seems comfortable. The grip is good - no tacky rubber parts to fall apart, though I'd like a slightly bigger knife to fit my hand better. The blade storage is adequate Blade change is old fashioned (no toolless quick change) Retaining screw won't get lost. A great little knife.
