Beautifully illustrated book about friendship, loss, and community...
So, I've been on Amazon a while. Since 1999, in fact, and I've never written a review. Last week my daughter came home from school with a new book, "The Friendship Bench", by Whitney Dineen. It's time for that first review. This is not "just another kids book". This is a kids book that engagingly teaches a practical way for kids to look out for each other, have fun, and well, be kids. It's already made a difference in our community, showcasing the talents of the kids from two local elementary schools (who are eagerly anticipating the arrival of the first two Friendship Benches in January!)The story is touching, poignant, and full of hope. But if you remember only one thing: Pay Attention to the Illustrations.Ohmygoodness! The author worked with local elementary kids of various ages to illustrate the book, and the drawings are fantastically authentic. These are obviously the work of grade school kids, but what they may lack in technique they make up more than 10x in capturing the emotion of a young girl who misses her best friend desperately. The different styles and points of view tie together seamlessly, showing how a school can rally together and take care of its own, illustrated by those doing the caring. These kids get it. The story may be about "Ella", but it's their story, too. Their drawings prove it beyond the shadow of a doubt."The Friendship Bench" has earned a treasured spot on our bookshelf, next to " The Giving Tree ", " The Dancing Man ", and " The Gardener (Caldecott Honor Award) ".Highly Recommended.

Such a wonderful book with a good message
Such a wonderful book with a good message. My daughter loves to look at all the illustrations in it, and she even was excited because it gave her different ideas of how to draw people. Highly would recommend this book!

Loved the theme and artwork!
This is definitely a book to treasure. My kids were very proud to peruse the pages and describe the story to me. The idea of a Friendship Bench, along with artwork from the children made a heartwarming book, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.The artwork was so carefully done by each student, it was really enjoyable to look through.

Destined to be a classic
Whitney Dineen and the children of The Groves have provided a tender, heart-felt message of care and concern for others. It is authentic and has a great lesson for children and adults alike. Way to go!

Friendships can go along way!
The is such an inspirational book for teachers and young children. Not only doesn't it show that kindness can go a long way, but losing a friend can be hard but their is always someone near you who has your back. Always trust those around.
