Paint or stain and varnish the wood to preserve its quality. Roof is covered with real copper that may form a patina when exposed to the elements unless treated. Roof also may have some imperfections, blemishes and/or fingerprints as they are handmade here in the US. Beautifully Made
These are very well built, however, they are expensive due in part to the copper roof. I have purchased a couple now, more for pattern and testing. The copper roof does stand up well to our rainy climate (Washington), however, I do recommend a good sealer (non-toxic) for the wood, as its unfinished. They hold a bee nest brick (13 trays) really well for the large unit.

Great purchase, would do again!
The bee house is sturdy and made with real wood. There is a little shelf to put unhatched eggs and room for a sizable hive tray (not included) for when they emerge. This makes a nice garden addition and I've enjoyed learning about the mason bees. They seem to like the setup so far. Many have set up their nests already.

Little disappointed.
Unfinished wood, average woodwork and mine came with no hook on the back to hang it up.
