Obscure recordings of the early Tangerine Dream
In the beginning of Tangerine Dream's career, they improvised a lot of their material. This set of CDs were all recorded live presumably by fans with portable recorders. Some of the recordings are sub standard. However if you are a fan of the early material, this is a must have. The recordings were made between October 1974 and June 1976. There are 7 discs in all. The concert from royal Albert Hall (1975) and Berlin Philharmonic are the best sounding of the set. Edgar plays some driven guitar licks on this CD. Before synths had evolved, they used Organs, string synths, mellotrons, and sequencers to create their tapestries of sound. if you want vintage Bauman era T dream, this is the way to go.

Classic Tangerine Dream
This set is amazing. I have been a Tangerine Dream fan since I first heard Melrose. I then bought up every TD CD and Album I could find. I explored all of their music styles from the early days up until the most recent days before Edgar's unfortunate passing. This CD contains my favorite TD style of music. I love the heavy synths and mesmerizing sounds. I've read other reviews about the sound quality of a few of the CDs, but I only noticed the music. Sure, there is a noticeable audio quality issue, but the music stands out anyway. I highly recommend this for anyone that enjoyed albums like Phaedra and the Thief soundtrack.

Bootleg Boxset 1
I got this to round out my collection on CD - The CDs here were originally fan recorded audience cassette tapes of live concerts from the 1970s and 1980s. They present some of the best examples of TD when they were more into improvisation and experimentation. If you're a fan and DON'T have this, you're missing out - there is also a Volume 2 and a number of other CDs in something called the Boot Moon Series on TDC label - some might be hard to find now but well worth tracking down.

Thumbs down
I am very disappointed - I am a real TD fan but the material on these CD's should have stayed buried. Don't buy! I only gave a 1 because zero is not an option.

Tangerine Trees and Leaves gathered up,re-mastered,re-packaged..and totally essential for any TD fans!!
This 7 disc collection gathers together fan made recordings of 5 inspired Tangerine Dream performances that occurred between 1974-76 featuring the beloved Froese-Franke-Baumann line-up.Originally these recordings were available for free on the Tangerine Trees/Leaves series, produced for no profit by hardcore TD fans and now it seems hard to get hold of(although there are a shedload on Ytube if this collection doesn't sate your thirst!..though this comp has the pick of the bunch) so Esoteric have re-issued,re-boxed and re-mastered these gems for public consumption. And that's about it..and no bad thing as what we have here is TD in all it's mindblowing, sequenced space travelling glory, live, unexpurgated,in the moment..no studio trickery,or post-production waffle..this is THE REAL DEAL!!And what's cool about this set is each gig had it's own particular flavour and style. The Sheffield 74 gig(my mum was there..the lucky blighter!!!) is TD at their most abstract, cerebral and impressionistic. The music here feels like it's transitioning from the more beatless soundscapes of Zeit and Atem into something more akin to the more ambient sections on Pheadra and Rubycon.A real late night set.The next disc,London 75,featuring Micheal Hoenig temporarily filling an errant Peter Baumann's shoes,is more blissed out..glacial yet welcoming.Another gig,not too far way in time nor space,Croydon 75,sees us back with the classic three, and is the set that formed some of the Ricochet live album(though over-dubbed and post-edited).The sequenced basslines are now stepping up a gear and so is the general lyricism of the music.Which leads us to the next and best imo disc/gig Bilbao 76-this gig sees the trio reaching stratospheric heights of sonic adrenaline. It would appear the air was politically charged in Bilboa at that time as this gig has a real energy about it.And i may be wrong but it feels as though this gig happened on an extremely hot and muggy day as this whole performance steams..you can almost feel the heat in the room, compared to some of their more wintry moments.Froese whips out his guitar early on and with it's whoops and cheers and claps from the audience from the get go,you really feel Td are peaking as a band here.Classic stuff. The final disc and perhaps the least memorable is the Berlin 76 gig where the group road test some of the material composed for "Sorcerer".A nice cooling off disc then.Esoteric have done a great job presenting this. For music that has not been recorded professionally(yes, this is certainly not studio quality but amazing for a bootleg) it comes across extremely well,if mastered just a little bit hot perhaps. But that's small whines...if you want more than just the studio TD experience,i'd fork out and get this asap. And yes if you still want more,i'd check out the Reims Cathedral and York Minister performances on Ytube, something about churches brought the real spiritual side of the Tangs out.To sum up..a must buy!

Sanctuary V. Esoteric - a comparison
So, which one is Best? The Box: a draw - Sanctuary's box is much bigger and more robust, whereas Esoteric's is smaller - with a clam-shell design. Whilst it is marginally less robust it is also glossier and more colourful. The design of discs: Esoteric - coloured 'vinyl' CDs just like some bootlegs.Look of the CD sleeves: Esoteric - several have extra photos and to my eyes are less garish than the Sanctuary sleeves. The design of the CD sleeves: Sanctuary - as it's far easier to get the discs out due to their larger size. Fans with big fingers will be struggling to remove the discs from some of the Esoteric sleeves (as mentioned in the other Amazon review) especially the two gate-fold ones. Sanctuary additionally included inner paper-sleeves to protect the discs, Esoteric didn't.The Booklet: Esoteric - 16 pages with colour & black & white photos, several of which haven't been reproduced in decades, compared with the fold-out rather cheap looking one included in the Sanctuary set.The Essay: Draw - both are solid, professionally written but slightly dull.Sound Quality: bit early to say but so far I'd say Esoteric just edges it.Running times: Sanctuary - for their corrected second issue only. Comparing both sets (original uncorrected releases) - a draw.Running times:Sheffield 1974Original Sanctuary release 43:53Esoteric Version: 41.27Royal Albert Hall 1975 disc oneOriginal Sanctuary release: 50.07Original (re-issued and corrected) release: 68.53Esoteric Version: 50.12Royal Albert Hall 1975 disc twoOriginal Sanctuary release: 53.50Esoteric Version: 53.52Croydon, Fairfield Halls 1975Original Sanctuary release: 61.47Esoteric Version: 61.47Bilbao, Spain 1976 disc oneOriginal Sanctuary release: 44.28Esoteric Version: 44.29Bilbao, Spain 1976 disc twoOriginal Sanctuary release: 69.57Esoteric Version: 69.58Berlin, Germany 1976Original Sanctuary release: 31.26Esoteric Version: 30.33

Good box set, slightly superceded by 'In Search of Hades'
Boxed set comprising 5 concerts from 74 to 76. Eagerly bought this for Royal Albert Hall concert, plus interested in any live stuff as their concerts are never the same twice. Predictably 'In Search of Hades' came out shortly afterwards, so I bought that as well (and why wouldn't you?). The Royal Albert Hall concert appears with extra 20 mins and is better quality on ISOH. The Croydon Concert has many components of what would become Ricochet and some other elements of this appear in raw form on the Bilbao concert. This latter concert does however have a very good encore based on the 'flute' mellotron sound. The Berlin concert is only 30 mins, but very enjoyable and decent production. It apparently formed the basis for 'Soundmill Navigator', but the latter has so many overdubs and re-workings that it is pretty much unrecognisable as the same, so I've just bought a copy of that as well. The Sheffield concert is unique I believe, recording-wise, other than being part of the Tangerine Tree issues of bootlegs, upon which this boxed set is based. This concert also has some more 'industrial' soundscapes, which make it interesting. Nice box set, but if you have In Search Of Hades, make sure you appreciate the overlap.
