Excellent For Novice to Expert
Raise a glass to Ian Buxton, for this is a great book! Excellent for anyone wishing to begin exploring whiskey, to us old whiskey snobs. The book has recently been updated, (4th edition, Sept. 2019). Mr. Buxton avoids rating the whiskeys in his book as to which is best, and presents them in alphabetical order. He challenges you to find the ones that you like. He covers the broad spectrum of whiskeys from Scotch Single Malts, Bourbons, Ryes, and even the new Indian entries, and explains why he chose them. Knowing that many of us will never see some of what many consider to be the best whiskies in the world, nor be able to afford them, he approaches the subject on a basis of value. He has even included a couple as a good base to mix drinks with. His main guide is price and establishes 5 price ranges, (in British Pounds). The high range extends above 150 pounds. Expensive, but not ridiculous. Each chapter or selection includes a photo of the bottle so that you can see what your looking for. The final page for each selection is for your notes. For you beginners, I recommend getting yourself a couple good whiskey tasting glasses, (they also can be found here on Amazon), before you start your journey. To us old whiskey snobs, expand your horizons. A few of my favorites are in the book, as are some others that reside in my collection, but are not yet sampled. So, why only four stars? This book is written for the English / United Kingdom market. The selection of whiskies is based on what is available in that market. Some, possibly many, may not be available here in the US, or may be difficult to find. (Don't let that discourage you. They may not be here, or widely available now, but in the near future?) The rating system that is used, value, is in British Pounds. Some of the bottles listed may not be in the same ranges on this side of the pond. This is due to import taxes and tariffs, and the conversion rates, Pounds to $$$$. I purchased the Kindle edition, I recommend that you go with the more tactile edition. It's easier to flip thru, than to scroll through.I know that I can find a reasonable number of his selections for under $30 locally. And Aldies??? Who knew?Enjoy!Mr. Buxton, thank you.

Great gift for the Whiskey/Whisky/Bourbon/Scotch Connoisseur!
I bought this book as a gift for my 23 year old son. He loves whiskey (or whisky, depending on where its from). His favorite is Jack, of course, but he likes to try new ones too, so his gift was a gift basket with a big bottle of Jack, then my hubs went to the liquor store and bought all of the little bottles that you would find in a mini-bar in a hotel and some snacks, cans of coke. It was a HUGE HIT!

but I really like the selection it can give
Interesting book, and obviously subjective, but I really like the selection it can give. It will be a gift to a friend who loves whiskies.

Not my cup of whiskey
Not sure exactly how they came up with this list... I know they gave the the break down avoiding one offs, barrel picks etc...I’m thinking this would more or less be a book suited for your beginning Whiskey drinker, it certainly is heavy on the Scotch side.
