how do I tell the positive end? does it matter?

These are not electrolytic capacitors and therefore have no polarity. SMD electrolytic capacitors look like small aluminum cans and have their polarity clearly marked. I have used the SMD caps in a number of applications from timing to audio functions and they work quite well
