About the Startup Describe your product in 3 words.Versatile mom scarf.How did you come up with the idea for this product?I saw my life change in an instant after I had my first baby, Max. My hair brush gathered dust while the bottle brush got a workout. Max’s outfits were cute and colorful, yet I ignored my own wardrobe while my body recovered from pregnancy, childbirth and nursing. The changes of motherhood were supposed to be beautiful. So why didn’t I feel beautiful? Then my family embarked on a tour around the continent with my husband Michael Hollick, a performer in The Lion King. We wittled down to our essentials, left a little house in Las Vegas, and moved every month to a brand new city with our life in a minivan! We gladly embraced a minimalist lifestyle. I suddenly felt lighter, freer, and happier without so much "stuff." Then we had another baby. Toting my new infant Eva around the country, I had a desperate need for a versatile, friendly and stylish product to help both burp and nurse her. Most burp cloths were like dish towels, and slipped off the shoulders or soaked through easily; many nursing covers on the market were utilitarian, looking like smocks or aprons. As a mama, I needed one garment to help me do everything, and still look great. So I decided to make it myself.What makes your product special?The Mamachic Scarf boasts a unique patent-pending design that gives you complete control over styling. It frees you with its versatility. It’s a beautiful luxury scarf that is easy to clean and carry. Further, eco-responsibility and transparency are paramount to Mamachic. Our scarves are made with rayon from bamboo fibers, sourced in China and supplied through British Columbia; the supplier regularly audits the Chinese mills that produce this rayon and verifies that the workers are paid fairly and treated well. The renewable bamboo plant (which is grown with no pesticides or fertilizers) is organically grown and Oeko-Tex 100 certified. Further, the filtered grey water from the spinning process is reused in local agriculture, and low-impact fiber-reactive dyes are used. Plastic snap buttons are tested to be lead- and phtlalate-free; labels and print materials are 100% post-consumer recycled; retail packaging is hemp-based. Lastly, the relationships we have fostered (and continue to foster) are vital to our success. We are committed to making the Mamachic shopping experience as personal, transparent and customer service-oriented as possible.What has been the best part of your startup experience?Our fast-growing Mamachic customer base and community has been the most uplifting and motivating part of this start-up! They are the reason we design and create; they are the reason we exist. Without the feedback, motivational stories and constant support from our diverse array of customers, we couldn't keep making this garment, and making it better. And to know I've made a difference in simplifying these mamas' lives is incomparable. We want mothers to reclaim their swag. We want them to embrace their new, strong role with positivity. We want mamas to know they’re beautiful — not in spite of being a mama, but because they’re a mama.
