Digitally remastered and expanded edition of this 1988 album from the British rockers. The Godfathers presented hard, crunching, socially-conscious Pop with a fierce R&B/Mod sensibility. Their three albums offered a powerful antidote to the puffed-up importance of the music scene. Birth, School, Work, Death was released in February 1988. a tie-in gig at London's Town And Country Club in Kentish Town on Valentine's Night 1988 marked The Godfathers step into the big time. The album made #80 on the UK albums chart, where it remained for two weeks. However, in the states, the title track was pushed heavily by college radio, and it became a Top 40 hit. "Birth, School, Work, Death has got to be a bit of a high point, 'cause that took off instantly all over the world and it's turned into a little franchise of it's own really," Peter Coyne was to say later. This reissue contains five bonus tracks as well as extensive notes by Mojo's Daryl Easlea. Lemon.

The title gives the theme but all songs are different.
A punk - new wave rock masterpiece. Hard rock beat and socially descriptive lyrics on the non-love songs. Even the love songs are not your standard grade and are never saccharin. The cover song is an anthem, which I play repeatedly, especially in these difficult times. But the lyrics never distract from the music. They've been playing together for 25 years. Listen to this and you'll see why they've lasted so long.

Remastered?
After comparing this to the original 1988 CD I am not convinced that it is remastered. The liner notes mention that it is remastered by a person who did not work on the original but if it is remastered it is a half-assed effort, as I mentioned earlier, I cannot discern any noticeable difference in the two. Another waste of my money, as was the recent reissue of Modern English's "Ricochet Days".

A classic from The Godfathers.
The British rockers The Godfathers 2nd album "Birth, School, Work, Death" #91 in 1988 is a great little album. A band that wears suits, they were CLASSY rockers! The lead off track is the title track #76 hot 100, and #38 mainstream rock. This is a great guitar rocker, the message is clear people. Kris Dollimore's guitar is tops."If I Only Had Time"- "Cary Grant's on L.S.D.". More rockin' here."Tell Me Why"- "You are my number one,yes you're the only one". They keep rockin' guitar frenzy at the end. It's So Hard"- "I drink to keep from crying". Very 60ish sounding, great little rhymic rocker, good violin by Bobby Valentino, one of Peter Coyne's best vocals."When Am I Coming Down"- "I've spoken to my sister I think it was today". Another great guitar workout, very dark tune here, a drug related tune, high on speed? Some fine drumming by George Mazur."Cause I Said So"- "Don't read Baudelaire's poetry, and I don't need no P.H.D". Some great bass here by Chris Coyne, this is a great little tune."The Strongest Boy"- "I don't think so". eastern flavored track, the chorus is great it's was just the right touch, crazy kid."S.T.B. - "And Reagan's on t.v., and he's staring back at me". Little rockin' number, has that 50's feel."Just Like You"- "I need more than a friend for today". A very poppy number by these guys, probably the most relaxed vocals by Peter Coyne."Obsession"- "You always hurt the one you love". Has kind of Move feel at the start, and then they kick it in."Love Is Dead"- "She needs a mental holiday". A very uplifting pop-rocker, the girl must of had a bad breakup.Produced by the late Vic Maile. The Godfathers are: Peter Coyne-vocalsChris Coyne- bass, vocalsKris Dollimore-guitar,vocalsMike Gibson-guitar,vocalsGeorge Mazur -drums,vocalsAlways liked the saying in the inner sleeve, "Contempt for wealth is a trick of the rich to stop the poor from getting at it". Thanks for reading.

The Godfathers Commit a Crime
I pride myself in finding great unknown Bands but rarely am I as surprised as I was when this Album/Band did not become popular. This Album is absolutely full of great radio-ready rock songs. There is nothing about this Album that was too inaccessible or for that matter much different than the popular rock of it's day. Not that it is dated, it all sparkles and seems fresh even today. I listened to this again yesterday after having not played it for years and again I sang and jammed along with every song. I hope the A&R folks at Sony in charge of this Album's promotion are currently in the food service industry but I know better. They are probably now the executives that continue to kill the recording industry by promoting whomever sounds like the last big hit. It you are a fan of melodic catchy hard rock get this CD. I guarantee you will be singing along after a couple of listens.

Birth School Work Death
Excellent first album by the Godfathers. The crown princes of the Dr Feelgood RnB crown. Punchy songs that also have a social message. Proof that NOT everything that came out of the 80s was throwaway pulp!

grandes recuerdos
