Handwoven Table Linens: 27 Fabulous Projects from a Master Weaver

The variety of projects & patterns is fantastic! Who doesn't like Tom Knisley? Photos are great!

Tom Knisley is a great teacher. I watch his instruction videos every chance I get so getting this book was a no brainer for me. The patterns are well written and easy to follow. He also writes a little something about the pattern, why it's important to him or to the history of fiber arts. My favorite is the Kitchen Sink Towels. The story of how and why weavers saved the smallest pieces of yarn to weave with inspired me. I save all of my loom waste now, tie it together and keep it on a spool until I have enough for the weft to make a few kitchen towels. Weaving is an old craft and I feel like little introduction to part of its history brings me closer to the art of it. This pattern and saving yarn that would have otherwise been thrown in the trash was a real eye-opener. Thank you, Tom.

I purchased multiples of this book to give as gifts to my weaving friends, and am so glad I did! This is a very straightforward collection of useful linen designs with great pictures and instructions, but not so comprehensive to be overwhelming to someone who is relatively new to weaving. Speaking as someone in that position, this was quite refreshing! Light and thin enough to pack in a day satchel, this book can go anywhere with you and provide inspiration for your own designs, and doesn't take up much room in a weaving caddy, either. Very pleased.

Lots of techniques are shown in this book. There are 27 projects with drafts, yarns, and directions for 4- and 8-shaft looms. . From rosepath to Quigley there are lots of my favorite weave structures in this book. You may want to weave the projects as given or use them for inspiration for your own colors and yarns. A dozen of the fabrics are pictured on the cover. Most of the projects are woven with cotton yarns. Cotton is durable and will wash well. So table linens is used here as a category of household textiles, not literally. All of these are designed to be used and enjoyed, not saved for best.

The patterns are great, there is a nice mix of 4-shaft and 8-shaft loom patterns. But the tie-up is very confusing because there aren't Xs (sinking shed or counterbalance) or Os (rising shed); there are numbers in the tie-up. On page 53 it says "Remember, the pattern shows on the shafts that don't rise" or something like that. Page 53?!

I admit to aspiring to own and weave on a 4-shaft or 8-shaft loom, but I currently have a pin loom, an inkle loom, and a 25" wide rigid-heddle loom. Because I very much like Tom Kniseley's teaching style, I purchased Handwoven Table Linens. It is a very informative and approachable weaving volume. Tom Kniseley's books and videos make one feel as if she can accomplish weaving any of the projects. I lament that I do not have a multi-shaft loom. Perhaps one day!

Most of the designs are for a 4-harness loom. There were a handful of designs for an 8-harness.I am enjoying the opening chapter on the history of table linens.

Love the pictures and ideas. Even a novice could follow the detailed instructions. It is very beautifully done. I didn't think I'd be excited to weave towels, but I have a whole new respect for how color can make something simple into something awesome. Can't wait to try some of these.

Bought as a gift for my friend, a weaver, who has found it very useful for new ideas.

I always leave Tom Knisely books with my head buzzing with ideas and colour combinations. This is no exception. From mug rugs, through placemats and napkins to table runners and tablecloth. Well worth having in your weaving library.
