I loved everything but one detail of the book
I loved the idea of this book; I liked D'Arcy and Sol very much as characters, I liked the idea of the world, I liked everything about the plot and where things were headed. It read beautifully and I was very engaged, eager to find out how things ended. I found the French in the book to be pretty interesting and I think the author did a swell job with the relationships and details and all that; this could have become a series, I think. It had a lot of the right focus in the right areas and I was actually pretty moved by and happy about the romance aspect; it came through properly in this book without it becoming some YA cliche that made me cringe or gag. It has a lot of promise and made a lot of good images in my head. It felt beautiful and meaningful. (I can't say much else without spoilers)The part I hated and which stood out of place like a hideous blemish on this otherwise beautiful book was the Nomas. The author could have done something better with the way she created this group of people; there were some good aspects, but some that were really out the blue and were very out of place with the way the rest of the book had been going. It felt unnecessary it didn't paint any nice imagery. I didn't like it; I wasn't a fan.I just re imagined some of those ugly/strange details, however, and overlooked some things in favor of something that I felt fit far better with the rest of the story, and got through the remaining section of the book and loved everything else about it. Other than that one big blemish, this book was a pretty satisfying read.

Oddly disappointing SPOILERS!!!
For some odd reason I thought that the description promised something else instead of what happened in the book. I enjoyed the first part of the book but in the latter part I became annoyed. Sol and D'arcy's relationship seemed to change too quickly once they discovered that they had been "desk buddies" for two years. I don't recall any embarrassment and there didn't appear to be "you aren't what I expected". Also I am personally not a fan of "We barely know each other but since we are attracted to each other let's have sex" so that bothered meAnd then other things didn't make sense. Since she had taken the wrong baby wouldn't her brother have found a way to send a cryptic text asking her to go to such and such a place so her grandfather could meet his great granddaughter or why didn't someone wait for her at the apartment? Why the overly elaborate game? And don't get me started on the F bombs that started falling at a certain point. Would that word in an alternate time line be part of the vocabulary? And last but not least how could her grandfather have betrayed his daughter and son-in-law seeing he was living in Belgium and they were in the US?Some of it was good but in the end more questions than answers and if this is a standalone then they won't be answered. But some of those questions were plot related.

Excellent book
Great storyline even if some parts did seem to really stretch it for convenience of the plot. excellent romance. Be prepared for uncomfortable situations and heavy language but most of it fits with the characters.

Heartache and Hope
I was really excited to read this book, and not just because of the absolutely *gorgeous* cover. ;) The entire premise of the story was fantastical enough to capture my attention, yet believable enough that I could see this happening in the world today. I liked Sol so much; I wanted her to succeed, to give the people she loved all that she could, and at the same time my heart ached for her. The ending was a little abrupt for me, but also hopeful, which at that point was definitely needed. All in all, a great weekend read!

Disappointed
The main character read like a boy, for me....a 10 yr old angry boy. Sigh. And it went downhill from there with the story line. Stealing her brother's newborn baby from the hospital when she isn't even allowed to be outside during the daytime? Risk imprisonment all so her blind grandfather could hold the child? Hello??? He's blind. Ask someone to bring over their baby for him to hold...he'd never know the difference! Instead, steal the baby from it's parents, and stuff it under your sweatshirt on a hot summer day. And then put the newborn in a kitchen drawer..Ignore the crying infant.( Again, something a young boy might do. ) This bordered on the ridiculous. Too many good books out there to waste my time on this one.

Review from Giselle at Book Nerd Canada
In an alternate reality where the Spanish flu has wiped out 50 million people, the United States adopted day and night workers to handle the care of treatment of the sick. Having worked so well that the pandemic was over, it turned into the regular way of life. Sol is a Smudge, only living her life at school, home and work during the evening. When she encounters D'Arcy, a Day, she realizes he may be her way to save her dying grandfather from kidnappers? What they find instead is something that can change the fate of her world as she knows it.Told in past and present tenses, Sol's voice is loud and unique. We find ourselves immersed in her life before her brother was arrested, to the present where things are chaotic and she has gotten herself into trouble with the law.I love the fact that Sol and D'Arcy know French and speak it loud and clear. I love that they dislike each other so much. There is no instant love here whatsoever. And before we even see the two being together, we get an inside look at who they really are. Elizabeth gets into their minds and we see a much clearer picture of their characters. Their attraction is real though, and you know they'll turn their hate into love soon enough. The anticipation is what killed me. I just wanted them together already. Sol's last thoughts were very wise and mature considering the outcome..I found her to be extremely refreshing.Lovely dystopian story.. Thank god the romance was super slow.. They didn't even like each other in the beginning. And the way the knew each other was just too darn cute. I also loved the fact that the ending wasn't predictable. If you're looking for an instant romance, there is none! If you're looking for a unique twist to the dystopian genre, grab this one. Sol's voice is true and very wise which made her one of my favourite likable characters this year.
