Split [DVD]

Excellent film brilliantly held together by James McAvoy's ferocious performance as someone with multiple personalities
Split is one of my favorite movies I've seen all year. Haven't liked much out there, and I generally love films no one else does, "Mother!" being another favorite of mine in 2017. In "Split", it's the performance of actor James McAvoy that made this riveting. I'd be surprised if he doesn't get a nomination. The movie starts right up without wasting any time. Claire and Marcia are two teenage girls gossiping about Casey, a third teenager who is withdrawn and distant from the rest of the teenagers at a birthday party. This makes Casey a social outcast and the talk of her peers in gossip circles. Casey's ride home never shows up due to her alleged rides car breaking down, so Claire's father insists on driving her and the girls home himself. All of the teens get in the car and wait as the father puts the groceries in the trunk. There is an altercation the girls don't see off screen and soon Casey who is in the front seat of the car discovers a strange man in the driver seat. When Claire and Marcia discover it too they move into a panic, but the man maces them. The man is Kevin, a guy who abducts the teens and locks them in a cell in some kind of underground house.Casey, the withdrawn social outcast character, ends up being the strong together one that gradually forms a bond with Kevin when she realizes that he has a dissociative identity disorder where he morphs in and out of 23 distinct multiple personalities. One of them being the ruler, "Dennis", the personality that originally abducted the teens, while another self personality being a nine year old boy she uses to get close to in order to help her escape.None of that gives anything away, but merely sets up the film in what is a riveting journey showcasing the varying personalities that Kevin becomes, all brilliantly played by James McAvoy. Anya Taylor-Joy plays the outcast Casey that Kevin soon senses a kinship with because Casey was also equally abused by her caregivers as Kevin. Although the abuse Kevin endured caused him to splinter into different personalities, some of them innocent, and others more dangerous.Generally, I find that most teen actors are too stiff to be believable in anything, but that's not the case with the three actresses that play Casey, Claire, and Marcia. Anya Taylor-Joy receives the majority of scenes and attention than the other two shallow girls. Yet, all three rise to the challenge and make this eerily believable. Much of that likely having to do with the fact that James McAvoy is so fantastic and in the zone that as actresses they have no choice, but to do their best to match him. His presence alone in the various personalities forces them to up their game, which they prove they're more than capable of in this. This was a fascinating dark film that takes so many abrupt twists and turns that you could never guess what's going to end up happening. M. Night Shyamalan wrote and directed this. In the past, M. Night has received quite a bit of backlash of being a hack when he was unable to create another film like the one that propelled him to fame, "The Sixth Sense." I disagree as I've always enjoyed some of his other works after that such as, "Signs", "The Village", "Unbreakable", and yes I sort of even liked, "The Happening." Although didn't care much for the other films he's done as I couldn't get into it."Split" is one of M. Knights best works to date. I even like it more than, "The Sixth Sense", which was good. In fact, when I first watched this I didn't realize it was his film as I didn't notice his name until the end credits, then I kind of sat back and went, "Wow. He did this?" Of course, it certainly helped by nailing the casting with James McAvoy as the lead. I was never really a fan or not a fan of his, as I simply didn't care either way, until I saw this. He was phenomenal and blew me away with his performance of someone having a dissociative disorder to the extreme. Definitely one of my favorite films this year, as well as M. Knight, and James too.

GREAT CAST AND SETTING
So overall, you won't regret watching this movie, I can promise you that. I had been recently watching clips of Split on You Tube before deciding to rent it on here, and I was super excited and nervous to watch this film. I'll give it to them, by the first 30 minutes I was hooked. They had great characters, especially Casey. It was well made, great setting and props. It was towards the end that I started getting iffy on the story. It just didn't feel like a completed storyline. (And I do understand that there is another movie but hear me out.)THERE ARE SPOILERS IN THE NEXT PART OF THE REVIEWSo Casey, in my opinion is the main character; she is who we are rooting for, and the different identities count as different characters, so yes Dennis, Hedwig, etc. are the leads, but Casey is the main character. I feel that during the movie Casey was made into a character that had undergone a lot of trauma, being raped by her uncle, before and after her father died. But after the Casey got out, being the only survivor, I felt that at that moment she was going to (now having learned so much about herself and others and being strong enough) tell the police officers that her uncle was hurting her. But she didn't. Therefore not completing the main character's, the character that we have been fighting for this whole time's story. That is why this movie is four stars.SPOILERS END HEREAnyways, overall this is a fine movie. But beware it contains topics or rape, child molestation, torture, death, murder, and of course, abduction and kidnapping. So yes, this isn't one of those superhero movies that is PG-13, but still okay to show your nine-year-old. I am a thirteen-year-old girl though and I was fine. Anyways, thanks for reading this, my rant of thoughts...have a nice day!

Interesting
There are 3 movies to this series: Unbreakable, Glass, and Split, which have each been written & directed by M. Night Shyamalan. He also makes cameo appearances in his films. Standing alone, each film is excellent. The 3rd film, Spit, lacks continuity with the 1st two films, but it's still intriguing. They are each movies about individuals with split personalities, in the realm of older films like Sybil or The Three Faces of Eve. The Life of Pi isn't a multiple personality movie, but it too is an interesting psychological film. If you enjoy the psychological play, you'll probably be as riveted as I was by the M. Night Shyamalan movies.
