Simple, Quick, Easy-to-Read
Pros:- Quick: Almost instant response to speed changes. My Garmin 310 is basically useless for assessing the effects of stroke changes and/or boat trim changes because it lags 3-5 seconds. A Garmin 201 lags a lot less (mostly only .5 seconds, occassionally 2-3 seconds).... but the SpeedPuck is hands-down better in that regard. Something about measuring doppler shift....- Simple to Operate: On/Off, 3 modes...one button.- Large Display: Large enough so you do not have to look at it - you can comprehend it out of the corner of your eye..- Floats: Albeit barely.... but replace the string lanyard supplied with a bouyant lanyard and it can easily be recovered if dropped in deep water. ... I stuffed some uni-cell foam into about 2 feet of 1" red tubular webbing.Cons:- It does *not* charge the batteries when you connect the USB cable. Plan on buying some NiMH cells and a smart charger. Except for the cost, I call this minor because the batteries go in and out very easily and I am always going to remove the back and download my tracks after use anyhow..... And the flip side is that you do not have to deal with proprietary batteries. Even AA alkalines will work..- The On/Off switch needs to be less sensitive to "On". Takes a Long-Press to turn it off and that's good..... but just *touch* that button and it's On.... leading, I expect to the occasional drained batteries when it is accidentally turned On during storage or transport..- Weak software. To be fair, I did not buy it for the software and you shouldn't either.... Having said that.... It computes 10-second average speed. 3 problems with that:1) The number goes away once the device is turned off. i.e. it is not downloaded into the data file..2) GPS inherantly returns anonalous readings every so often. In a 2-hour run I almost always get some goofy high speed as my max..... The computation needs to throw out the highest speed during the 10-second period..3) 10 seconds is too long for a small boat in gusty conditions..... It needs to allow the user to specify the number of seconds in the averaging period."Horses for Courses".... if you want simple, quick, and easy-to-read and don't mind spending $100-200 more, this is the device..Only reason I don't give it 5 stars is the On-switch thing..... The lack of USB charging is really small change IMHO, and the refinement in average speed computation is probably asking too much....

Puck - great. Software? Horse $#&*
The puck is awesome. Does its job. Would rather it have a longer battery life (add another AA!), but I'm good with it.The software....SUCKS. Bigtime. I'm convinced that it worked..maybe sort of...at some point, but it's complete garbage now.

Worth the cost
This is expensive, but it knows what it is doing and does its job well.

A+ Great product for Surfs/Kayak/SUP
I use the Velocitek SpeedPuck on my Epic V12 Surfski, Epic Endurance 18, and my Coreban Turbo 14 SUP. This is a must have if you want to see your speed easily and track stats/progress on your trip! Its very durable and easy to change from various boats/SUPs with 3M dual lock. Overall A+
