Futurama: Volume 5 [Blu-ray]

Confusion: Volume 5 --- Season 5 ?
I am still confused.I have the 'Complete Collection' in Bender's Head that carries Seasons 1-4 and the four direct-to-dvd movies, and Volumes 6 and 7.I think I'm missing the episodes on Volume 5, but can't determine if Volume 5 and Season 5 are the same.I wish they'd stick to one nomenclature to avoid confusion.I'd like to see a list of Seasons and Volumes, side by side for comparison so I don't waste money on duplicates.Review Update:I found the information I was looking for. To save the rest of you the time/effort of online research:Futurama: from Wikipedia:The American animated science fiction sitcom Futurama, created by Matt Groening for the Fox Broadcasting Company, aired on Fox from March 28, 1999 to August 2003; Cartoon Network's Adult Swim aired reruns of the show from 2003 through 2007. Following a commitment from 20th Century Fox Television to produce four straight-to-DVD Futurama films, Comedy Central announced in June 2006 that they were resurrecting the show and would air the films as new Futurama episodes (reconfiguring each film into four episodes) after each film's DVD release.[1][2] Comedy Central began airing Futurama reruns in January 2008 and broadcast the first film in March 2008.[3] Following the four films (considered the fifth season of the show), Comedy Central has broadcast a sixth season of twenty-six episodes, split over 2010 and 2011.[4] A seventh season was announced in March 2011 and debuted in the summer of 2012.[5]As of August 29, 2012, Futurama has broadcast 127 episodes, concluding the first half of the seventh season. The series is currently on hiatus and will return in mid-2013.[6]The original 72-episode run of Futurama was produced as four seasons; Fox broadcast the episodes out of the intended order, resulting in five aired seasons. On April 22, 2013, Comedy Central cancelled Futurama, announcing a series finale date of September 4, 2013.[7]=====================================================================================Here is a list of my collection, including Volume 5, which will complete it when I buy it in May [update: I now have every episode to date):Personal Note: The 'Volumes' are collections for home use, in the order they were produced... I hope they can return to TV soon. I also hope they do what they did the last time, and release new episodes as direct-to-dvd movies.I hate it when the Networks cancel a popular show, just because 'ratings' are down.I would love to see Comedy Central FLOODED with requests to keep Futurama. Maybe with enough fan mail, they'll reconsider their folly and bring Futurama back. Also, enough complaints to the FCC will help to inform them that this show is in the public interest and should be reinstated...At the very least, I hope Matt and David chose to make direct to DVD movies in the interim...

Futurama returns...
I am a huge fan of this show; I honestly think this is the best animated comedy series ever produced, and I have watched the first 4 seasons countless times. What has always appealed to me about the series has been the excellent writing. Rarely, if ever, did Futurama fall back on weak comedic crutches- I very much appreciated that flash in the pan type pop culture references were largely avoided, unlike most other animated series. This lent a more timeless aspect to the show, and also meant that anyone with a sense of humor could enjoy things, without calling on knowledge of contemporary pop culture or esoteric background information. Not to say the series didn't have pop references, but they tended to be general and accessible, and carefully avoided dating the show. Additionally, as anyone who has watched the first 4 seasons will know, there is a consistent, overarching story line, and the episodes tie together in a far more cohesive manner than most shows of this genre. So, like any fan, I was a little disappointed when the series was unceremoniously ended- and was excited, but also a little hesitant when it came back.First, there where the movies... these were just okay... they felt a little unfocused and overcooked in some respects, but I just attributed this to the fact that they were a longer format- this kind of humor and storytelling works best in its intended format: 22 +/- minute episodes. So when I saw that a new season was coming along, I still had hope. Now, here we finally have season 5, and it is a bit of a mixed bag for me. The short format again keeps things snappy and paced. It is great to see the characters interacting with the kinds of scenarios that helped define the series. But... there is a downside here too. The 'feel' of the show is off... something about the characters often feels like they are parodies of what we have come to know, rather than the genuine article. Something that I also found immediately disappointing was that the show now is sometimes just drowning in pop culture references. Gone are the subtle stabs at silly trends, inventions, marketing etc., as were often seen in the 'old' shows. Here, we have overtly blunt humor, such as the (entire) episode that (attempts) to lampoon the apple iphone, featuring Mom's "eyephone". It's almost like you can see the writer's working things over... but then they just take the easy way out, poking shallow fun at what is just a passing trend in the way you would expect from a home-brewed YouTube video, but not from the often clever writing/scenarios you would expect from Futurama. For me, this sort of sums up the feel of this season. It's like the ideas are just kind of half incubated, and we are left with a series that feels like it is almost trying to spoof itself, rather than blazing a new trail. Not that there are no good aspects- there are a couple of gems here, and many small moments that will make you smile, if not laugh out loud. But it the end, things feel disjointed, and the show has a sense of having lost its stride a little.I'll finish by saying I am not putting down the writers at all- this was just such a great series, so it is no doubt hard to keep that legacy going; the careful balance just needs to be found again.Ultimately, if you like Futurama, I would still recommend buying this (you know you are going to anyway). It's entertaining... but it also kind of makes you just want to go back and watch the older seasons again because they are noticeably better.Hopefully, season 6 will capture the lighting again, and we can get back to the year 30XX as we remember it...Now, if you will excuse me, I need to go try out my new Thinglonger...

Good News!
Sooooo good to have Futurama back. What with the tardiness of the UK DVD release of this (essentially half) season, it has been a good few years before we have had a full run of 'normal' episodes - by which I mean the usual 20 minute format. If anything the writing has got better, the jokes are funnier and the storylines are even more complex. And it can also produce a tear or 2 - I'm looking at you 'The Late Philip J Fry'! Bender just gets more and more funny and has a lot of the best lines, as does the Professor, but Fry's severe lack of the clevers sometimes steals the show with blisteringly funny one-liners as well as pathos for his simple loving nature. The one criticism would be that Zoidberg has not been used much here and is slowly turning into the wise-cracking quipper, which would be a shame as he is one of my favourite characters.Best episodes: 'Attack of the Killer Apps' for its topical hilarity, 'The Duh-Vinci Code' because of its great story and pithy asides to the Dan Brown monstrosity that it apes (sort of), 'The Late Philip J Fry' simply because it is one of the best Futurama eps ever made as well as having a coherent story (in a Futurama-ee kind of way) and great mixture of jokes and heart-string pulling, especially during the final scene: both touching and hilarious; and I also really enjoyed 'That Darn Katz' just for being so typically bonkers and strangely Lovecraftian.A brilliant comeback from a beyond-super-infinite-brilliant-to-the-power-of-10-etc show. Long may it last, all the way to the end of the universe and back round again. And again. The only problem is the wait for the DVDs to be released - as with the Simpsons, they seem to be taking an age to reach UK shores.

"Every nerd's fantasy!"
I absolutely love Futurama no doubt about it! I quote it often on a daily basis! So after the success of the 4 movies and continuous pressure from fans to bring it back Futurama has returned with great gusto! What I love about the new Futurama is how the writers drop references and characters from earlier episodes back into these new episodes, showing a great deal of care and genuine affection they have for the franchise. My personal highlights of this Season 5 boxset have to be 'The Prisoner of Benda', 'Lethal Inspection', 'Proposition Infinity' and 'The Late Philip J. Fry', very clever episodes for the true diehard fans such as myself. I'm not surprised 'The Prisoner of Benda' was nominated for an Emmy. And Bender dressed up as Leela at Comic Con 3010 declaring himself 'Every nerd's fantasy' is the highlight of the whole box set. Plus Matt Groening and the writers poking fun at Futurama being cancelled with their 'new' series Futurella!Futurama has definitely still got it!I must go now. I feel like I'm coming down with a case of 'Circusitis'. What's this you ask? Just buy this box set! Simple.Bring on Season 6! Hail Futurama!

FUTURAMA'S BACK BABY!
I love FUTURAMA. I've watched the classic episodes a bazillion times on SKY and have yet to grow tired of them. So after viewing the rather disappointing specials, I was really worried that the FUTURAMA writers had lost their touch. Thankfully, my fears were unwarranted. FUTURAMA is back and in terms of quality, hasn't missed a beat since its foolish cancellation by FOX in 2003. And who cares if SKY won't carry it? I'm quite happy to watch it on DVD and enjoy all the extras you get with said. COMEDY CENTRAL have already renewed this great show for another two seasons so lets all hope it runs for a lot longer than it did in its first incarnation. Long live FUTURAMA!

It's back, and just as funny as it ever was, but now in HD...
Popping the new series of 'Futurama' into my Blu-Ray player, I powered up the projector and hit PLAY.The quality of the animation, the bright colours and the amazing surround sound were all fantastic, but none of that would matter if Futurama had failed to keep up the consistently funny and sometimes thought provoking writing from the series that was (stupidly) cancelled back in 2003.After 4 straight to disc almost feature length movies released a couple of years ago, Futurama is back on the tv as a series again, and it's awesome. If you're a fan buy it.

As Good as Any of the 1st Four Series
After three great movies (plus the lame 4th movie, "Into the Wild Green Yonder") it is great to have this excellent series back. And well worth the wait, with 13 excellent episodes. Realistically it is easier to have no dud episodes with such a short season, than some of the longer series, still an excellent return and the set promises a 6th series, so here's hoping. If you bought the first 4 series, do not hesitate to buy this excellent 5th series. Futurama 5 [Blu-ray] [US Import ] Futurama 5 [Blu-ray] [US Import
