My Favourtie Nursary Rhymes / Various

These nursery rhymes are all set to music, some featuring male voices, some featuring female voices, and all but four of them are officially credited as traditional, their original writers lost in the mists of time. Whole books have been written about nursery rhyme origins, but here there is no commentary as the booklet just lists the tracks and other basic details. The four non-traditional songs are Teddy bear's picnic (originally recorded by Henry Hall, whose version remains my favourite), How much is that doggie in the window (a UK hit for Lita Roza and an American hit for Patti Page), Going to the zoo (originally written and recorded by Tom Paxton, but also recorded by several other singers), and I can sing a rainbow, sometimes just titled Sing a rainbow; it was written by Arthur Hamilton, who also wrote Cry me a river, and was first recorded by Peggy Lee.I had long been aware that Baa baa black sheep had been regarded as controversial, but I never took that controversy seriously. Nevertheless, the lyrics here include verses about a white sheep and a grey sheep. Will these verses satisfy the critics. I don't know, but they do make it more interesting, if only because I've not heard them before.The remaining songs are mostly songs that I heard in my childhood but haven't heard since except (in some cases) on other compilations of children's music. There are a few that I don't remember hearing, but I certainly never heard anything about white or grey sheep back in those days.In the UK, this compilation is priced as a budget release. At that sort of price, it represents great value for money. At a higher price, it would depend how keen you are and how it compares with other collections available at the time.TracksCD 11.
