Another great Magic Sam live set!
Where has this set been? It should have come around 1982 in the wake of Delmark's "Alex Club/Ann Arbor set. This is certainly, at the least, the equal of any other live Magic Sam issue.First, to save us all time, if you liked the Ann Arbor set, you may as well buy this one now. It is the same band, slightly better sound quality, and a similar (but expanded) set list. In addition, I feel that the performance here is even better! There are three great BB King covers, including "I've Got Papers" which was deleted from the CD issue of Ann Arbor. The version here is stronger. Sam performs three Freddie King instrumentals; "San Ho Zay" is stronger and more together than at Ann Arbor, and both "Just Pickin'" and " Hideaway" are tremendous. There are two Albert Collins covers as well - they both smoke. One is mistitled: "You Were Wrong" but I cannot remember Albert's title (sorry!).Sam's vocals are amazing, and his guitar work is on fire. Rock/blues fans: this is how smoking blues guitar should sound. Yes, SRV fans should enjoy this - just pretend it's Stevie doing an all-blues set and you'll be enraptured. The liner notes feature the history of Magic Sam; I would have preferred the history of the show and these tapes; that was a huge part of the "Alex Club/Ann Arbor" release. This is a great release. I know many folks have complained about the sound on other Magic Sam live releases; while this beats Ann Arbor, if you cannot listen to that, you'll be unhappy here. For any fans of Sam, the prior live releases (two on Delmark, one on Black Magic/Black Top), or hot blues - grab it now. I have no insider knowledge, but it always seems that releases like this vanish, like Magic Sam, far too soon.An instant favorite; an instant classic.

Magic Like Magic
Every time another recording turns up with Magic Sam,I just have to get it. I was fortunate enough to see Magic Sam live in Gothenburg,Sweden(my home town) in October 1969,where Sam was part of the American Folk Blues Festival.Magic Sam made a great impression on all of us blues fans.We were deply saddened by the fact that he died only two months later.Listen to this and Magic Sam is alive again!

What might have been
Thankfully, in the discography of Magic Sam are two must have's: Black Magic and the iconic West Side Soul. There are also several wonderful live recordings if you can get beyond the somewhat archaic sound quality of those otherwise prized efforts. Sam's Live 1969 Raw Blues is much like the earlier Delmark live recordings.Yes, it shows the power of Sam's guitar playing and his amazing vocal ability. However, the recording is somewhat sub-standard, even by 1969 criteria. That said, Magic Sam fans certainly won't be disappointed in Sam's performance at legendary Bay Area Rock/Blues club, Mandrake's. If nothing else, it is further affirmation thatthis west side giant gave us his all playing small clubs just as he did at high profile blues festivals or rock emporium, where he finally gained long overdue recognition just months before his tragic death

Bound to be Perfect
Saw him in LA in 1969 at the Ash Grove. Wonderful. Rented amps, no high hat, and Sam had one foot in a cast. Second set featured a famous English guy on piano , happily unmiked so not too bad. Sam and his band were absolutely perfect. Buy this record. P.S. some would say that Sam did his version of Hideaway before Freddy.

Beware of poor sounding vocals
I purchased this CD on Amazon after listening to the entire play list then sold it as used to my local CD store. Because the sounds of the vocals are extremely poor like the man is singing from inside his shower tinny with echoes. The liner notes state Magic Sam was using a" PA microphone setup and that gave him the high echo when singing". So unfortunate because his guitar work does sound like Stevie Ray Vaughn and if Magic Sam was using the proper Microphone and Amps this really would be a terrific CD. For me the sound was just not acceptable. However if you're a real diehard fan of Magic Sam you might want this in our collection.

Magic Sam was a God, taken from us too soon
The real hero of Chicago's West Side Sound the man born Sam Maghett died at only 32 and remains the young blues Lochinvar ever since. By the end his revolutionary picking style (no picks, all figures used) made him a hero to John Fahey, Jerry Garcia and a legion of hippies at the Fillmores. He was going to go on the road with the Grateful Dead with a recording contract with Atlantic Records being mooted but it was all for naught. This is Sam at the top of his game in a club. All the Sam Classics are present and did I say he was a wonderful, powerful singer as well? I own EVERY Magic Sam release and this is pretty much at the top of the pile. Had he lived he would have been Robert Cray before Robert Cray was. If you follow me here...

It's "live" in 1969 in a club, therefore it's "Raw"...
I've heard live gigs recorded on a weird little tape recorder before, so what can one expect? It doesn't sound much different from Delmark's Alex Club record from 1961 so... Just listen to what's going on though, Sam is playing the hell out of the guitar with all 10 fingers (never used a pick), while singing like a soul in torment. He just can't be compared to anyone else, he's like Jimi Hendrix and Sam Cooke combined. Listen to That's All I Want. Doesn't it remind you of Sam Cooke? Nuts!
