Q: Can we buy just the receiver?

That would be a manufacturer question. I really don't know if the receiver will work without the base charging station. In all honesty I bought both together and they work just fine.

This tool does one job - It translates a bar code into numbers displayed on your PC screen. Put those numbers into Excel, and you can use Excel's text facilities to manipulate the result.
