Paradise Lost: A Graphic Novel

Fantastic Edition for First Time Milton Readers
I originally got it because I wanted to experience the story without having to trudge through 17th Century English syntax and phrasing, which this graphic novel definitely allowed me to do. From the first page on, however, I found myself stricken by the scenes and images. Auladell really does an incredible job setting the story to panels, and takes full advantage of the graphic novel form to create a truly unique reading experience.

Not the poem, but a graphic novelist's realization of the story...
Love the style and illustrations --- somehow beautifully suited to Milton's poem.Oddly, I found Auladell's depiction of God disturbing. Can't quite put a finger on it. The interesting thing about Auladell's work is that he, intentionally I'm guessing, illustrates the work as Milton might have imagined it. All the angels are white male Caucasians with blue eyes, including God, who is massively white with a neck and arms like a linebacker. All the rest, on heaven and hell's side, are white males. There's not one female angel that I can remember. As with Milton's own work, one finds oneself somewhat sympathizing with the devil. God strikes one as aloof --- and anything but "loving". Milton's poem and Auladell's illustrations hearken back to the Iliad, more than the Bible. That said, be aware that calling this the "abridged version" is well, wildly understated. What text there is, while direct from Milton's work, *might* add up to one page of paradise lost. You buy this not to read Paradise Lost, but to marvel at a graphic novelists re-imagination of the work.

Beware of Content
I am a teacher and bought this to use for a class but quickly found that the book is cool but there are pages not fit to share with students. Again, the book is cool but not to use to teach.

A powerful Paradise Lost
An illustrator friend of mine said that the amount of work and thought that went into this book, made her feel so overwhelmed she couldn't read it. If, like me, you live in blissful ignorance of how much time and effort it takes to produce a book like this - enjoy! The characterisation is incredible - Satan: angry young man in a hat. (The hat is somehow PERFECT). God: blue-eyed and marshmallow-ey...A mysterious and very human story brought to vivid life.

Good when combined with the original book
To be honest, I don't like the artist's traits, but I admire his work in turning this great classic into a graphic novel. I bought this book to complement the reading of the original book, Paradise Lost. I'm sure this book will help you understand this poetic work written by John Milton. My recommendation is: don't just read this book, make sure you read the original, it's fantastic.
