Spiritual Direction: Beyond the Beginnings

I am nearing completion of my program to become a certified spiritual director. I appreciate that Ms. Ruffing delves into topics which we will likely encounter with directees who have been on this journey for the long term. There is a maturity to this work that is reassuring as I move forward. She honors the many traditions of those seeking companionship on their spiritual journey while encouraging openness to God's many ways of revealing God's self, yet circles back to a distinctly Christocentirc narrative. I appreciate the research approach to this ministry that is nothing if not experiential--therefore subjective. The included chart on theological themes is a gem that was surprisingly more helpful than I might have guessed. Well done. Thank you, Janet, for taking us Beyond the Beginnings.

It wasn't what I was specifically looking for. That said, the info is excellent and well presented. A really good read.

From the viewpoint of one seeking direction after many years of seeking help, this is an excellent book with suggestions as to what can be covered and how one's deepest needs and longings can be expressed.

A well written helpful book that I would recommend to all involved in Spiritual Direction. The word illustrations are challenging, interesting and thought- provoking. The writer conveys a great sense of spiritual energy.

EXCELLENT PIECE OF WORK

Wide ranging, carefully considered, wise and convincing. The psychology is well understood and conveyed, and the whole thing, while intellectually satisfying, is written in accessible language. An extremely useful and quite important book, I feel. The chapters on Love Mysticism and Mutuality are particularly significant ; some of this stuff really needed saying and I'd like to see it developed even further. An excellent and rewarding read.
