Works of John Flavel (6 Vol. Set)

John Flavel is an amazing, inspiring, convicting and encouraging Puritan pastor and writer. It's a joy to read his works. I have a number of individual Banner of Truth books by Flavel (e.g., The Mystery of Providence, one of my absolute favorites), but am thrilled to now have this complete set. I normally wouldn't spend this much money on books, but finding his complete works is rare and absolutely worth it. The books arrived impeccably packed and even earlier than I expected. Couldn't be more pleased!

So thankful to have found this set. It is now out of print and you have to sign up on a waiting list witht he publisher. A timeless classic, set of 6 John Flavel sermons.

This six volume set is wonderful. It is a vital part of any religious studies student's collection, along with Matthew Henry's Bible Commentary set. It is amazing how much clarity the scholars of the 17th and 18th centuries had in matters of the Faith. Far more than many so-called "experts" in theology today.Among the collected works in this set is the seminal title, "Preparations For Suffering". And I believe every Christian should read this particular piece. It should be required reading because it speaks to the heart of the reality that Jesus taught, that true Christians may very well be thrust into a hostile environment and should be prepared to undergo the tribulations of such things.But, too, suffering is not always at the hands of another. Oftentimes, life itself, the circumstances into which we are born, will present challenges through which we will suffer. Whether internal or from external sources, suffering should not be seen as something we must avoid...not in every case.If more pastors and preachers taught with the wisdom and understanding of these earlier faithful servants in Christ, there surely would be less confusion about what Christianity really is supposed to embody for the believer. As it is, we have the Brian McLarens, Tony Campolos, Leonard Sweets and others who are currently attempting to upend what it is to be a true Christian, even claiming we have it all wrong because of our Greco-Roman way of thinking. Such "Conversations" only serve to further destroy the heart and soul of the Faith, that we are sinners unworthy of redemption except for the saving grace and blood of Christ.If you love the "happy, shiny Jesus" kind of preaching you're getting at church today, you won't like these works. They're hard, they challenge, they reveal that absolute truth can be known, that Jesus can be known - and understood through the context of the Scriptures. Volumes such as Flavel's, Henry's and others, such as Whitefield, Mahan, Edwards, et al, will always serve the growing believer and bolster their faith in a loving God who brooks no rebellion, but forgives all rebellion in the contrite and humble heart of the sinner who comes to believe in and welcome into their lives the God of all Creation, Christ Jesus: Messiah, Saviour and Lord of Lords, King of kings and the only true Prince of Peace.

A must read in addition to Owen and Edwards

This is a great set of books! I have already read three of them, (some re-reads) and intend to read all. They are a beautiful set and in great condition! What a nice find!

Flavel é considerado como um dos puritanos mais fáceis de ler - e é verdade, e a edição da Banner of Truth é fantástica. Dentre outros escritos, neste volume 6 tem os comentários do autor ao Breve Catecismo de Westminster (só por isso já valeria!).
