The Skillful Huntsman is a sketchbook that takes the reader through the visualization process by analyzing the work of three artists.It's important to note that this is not a book like, "The Art of Lord of the Rings" or "The Art of Star Wars," full of finished photoshopped paintings from the films. In this book, three artists and their instructor decided to turn the Grimm Fairy Tale, The Skillful Huntsman, into a sci-fi concept suitable for films, TV, or Video Games. The book includes the short tale, so the readers are familiar with the story.The rest of the book breaks down the concept art for the project. The artists start with simple black and white silhouettes which are designed to catch the eye or leave an impression on the viewer. They move on to simple sketches, then facial drawings, and finally some finished work. Each page has a paragraph or two, describing how each artist approached the task. They talk about their train of thought that led them to the finished drawings. Their influences, their mediums, the function of the piece, why they drew the environment from that angle, etc...One thing that you will definitely learn is that form follows function. Every sketch in this book had a good deal of thought behind it. The artist takes into account the impact on the viewer, the function of the item, and how it ties into the overall visual theme.In this book, there are examples of sci-fi characters, organic environments, futuristic city scapes, and mutant creatures. It's a great book if you want to understand the creative process on a professional level and you can incorporate the silhouette, rough, sketch, final, process into your own work. It's inspirational and very creative. I'd highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn about visual development and concept art.

This book is very entertaining and educational, as it not only has great art, but breaks down the concept art process in a way that most people don't get to see, from rough sketches and silhouettes to finished paintings. It also depicts a variety of world-building elements like characters, environments, and props, so there is something for everyone to enjoy and take inspiration from. I also really liked how the book includes the art of 3 different people, it's very cool to see how they interpreted everything differently and in their own style.

I bought this book originally because it sounded interesting: three artists conceptualizing the same fairytale. What I got was a book FILLED with sketches (which I love, as an artist myself). These three gentlemen walk us through their creative process visually, so you can see how blocking out character shapes turns into detailed character design with color, attitude, and even some humor. I flip through this book regularly (have had it now for two years), and I'll see a headdress here, a sword there, a detail on a gown, and it gives me new ideas for my own characters.Of the MANY books that claim to be concept art, The Skillful Huntsman is, by far, the best I've found. Love love love.

This book is probably one of the most inspirational digital/hand drawn illustration books out there. It follows three students with three different techniques and style as well as ideas through the creative process. They make it look so easy! Critiques and suggestions given by their professor are also included so you know what they were hearing as they drew up these amazing plans. The best part about this book is it makes you want to create art! So if you are a struggling artist, in school or out, and don't know where to begin, check out this book.

Amazing work for such young artists. It was interesting to see how Scott Robertson (the teacher) coached the students and explained some of the different methods they used for exploring ideas. I would also liked to have seen the instructions and techniques that Scott used to explain some of the ideation concepts to the students also. This is an amazing book - the drawings are so loose and beautiful - they inspire and astound.

Absolutely gorgeous and wonderful, the book is a fantastic addition to any library. Being a fan of concept art and Grimm tales, I was stoked to get my hands on it, and once I'd seen it in a teacher's collection--I absolutely had to own it myself.It came quickly and in wonderful condition, and the art inside was just as beautiful as I had remembered! I was more than happy to put it on my bookshelf.

It's a new twist on an old tail... as it says in the forward, "What you hold in your hand is something very old and very new..." and that couldn't sum it up better.Personally I Love this book, it shows the level of creativity you've gotta have going on to be in the Vis Dev or Concept Art biz. It also really kicked my brain into high gear creatively as well as helped spark a newly found interest in environments... it's been inspirational to say the least!I don't know what else to say that hasn't already been said... Defiantly something artist interested in Concept Art/Design or Visual Development should check out if they are serious about it.

This is an essential book for future character designers, and one which changed the artbook industry. The book takes you through the design process all the way back to the napkin sketch phase, helping newer artists understand more thoroughly how to develop a character.Top Recommendation

This book not only shows stunning artworks but Robertson's feedback of every part of the process, it helps you a lot to understand how to work as a concept artist.

Every page is so detailed and full of inspiration for further concept work. I love it.

Its not for beginners, but worth buying you can see the process undergoing how the concept art works. Scott Robertson is the man if you want your career to be in concept art for gaming, movies etc... Hope who buys it has fun.
