Tiny Creatures: The World of Microbes (Our Natural World)

easy for kids to understand
What a fantastic book! The explanation of microbes starts with the comparison of a whale and the antenna of an ant, to give readers a sense of scale. Then microbes are described - and illustrated - as a concept. The scientific art is precise and relatable. Microbes are also cast as both helpful and harmful. Microbes multiply quickly, as illustrated by one E. Coil splitting into enough tiny bacteria to fill a whole page in 11 hours! Microbes also are responsible for healthy soil, and there’s a great illustration of a garden.Usually, books are great for one or two of my kids and not the other given the age span. This book was a perfect fit for my kids - aged 4, 7, and 9. And it’s an awesome example of how it’s sometimes easier to learn science through art. I highly recommend this book for classrooms and homes with elementary school kids!

Beautiful resource
This book does a wonderful job of introducing microbes to a young audience in a way that is approachable and inviting. The size of microbes, in particular, is explained in a wonderful way. My nearly three year old was immediately drawn in by the gorgeous pictures. I expect that his understanding of why we wash our hands and what decomposition is (both topics I have been struggling to explain well) will continue to improve as we reread.

Excellent book for children to spark their interest in science.
I loved this book! It was very interesting and the illustrations were excellent! I didn’t know that microbes are inside rocks and they cause the rock to break down into dirt. My daughter teaches fourth grade and she took the book to share with the other teachers sothat that they all can read it to their classes.

Great science for the young reader.
Microbes as organisms too small to be seen by the human eye are a topic that would be hard for children to understand since it's a rather abstract concept. Nicola Davies has done an excellent job in explaining the concept of these small creatures that out number people by many millions to one. The amazing world of microbes comes to life in Davies' words and Sutton's illustrations. There is just enough detail to be interesting without becoming overly complicated for the intended audience. The illustrations show the differences in sizes between different microbes and how different they look as well as how quickly they can multiply. It's a subject that can be rather overwhelming yet made palatable by the excellent work of Davies and Sutton.

Fun
My four year old is obsessed with microbes. This book is fun and colorful. This may just be us but we wished for more pictures of actual microbes that were labeled so we knew what we were looking at but it’s still a book we like to read and look at!

Worth having in your Little’s library
This book is super cool. The artwork is charming and the information is informative. We got this for homeschooling as a nice starting off point for discovering and understanding what we can’t see. My little ones was drawn to the book and started flipping through right away. I like how they use things like a whale to describe proportions to size.

Love this book
This book is well written and beautifully illustrated. It has clear explanations that both eliminate undue fear AND encourage proactive steps to protect against illness. Very timely for the pandemic. My children loved it and it started a great ongoing conversation about germs.
