Detective Stories (Everyman's Library Pocket Classics Series)

This is a great collection of some top-notch detective stories, ranging from Edgar Allan Poe to contemporary writers such as Ian Rankin. While I already knew (and loved) some of the stories, such as Agatha Christie's "The Blue Geranium," Susan Glaspell's "A Jury of Her Peers," and J.L. And as is usual with Everyman's Library editions, the book is beautifully printed.

This is a beautifully designed little collection of detective stories from diverse authors over a span of more than a century. It includes many superb tales -- although inevitably what appeals to some readers will not to others. My favorites were more at the beginning of the book than at the end. And no parody of Sherlock Holmes, even by Bret Harte, can come close to the original. My only complaint is that an anthology like this should include Rex Stout. This omission is unforgivable! But I don't regret having bought the book, which was an enjoyable read.

Within this collection are old yarns you've read before in highschool, like Purloined Letter. There's one or two by Christie and Doyle, which are a good read but included are incredibly bland stories like Long Looked For, Come At Last, which reads like a policeman's journal. It was totally devoid of ANY literary merit! You also get 1940's style gangster detective fiction like Leg Man; it's the Perry Mason type and not even real a mystery. The fast talking, cliche ridden idioms and anachronistic phrases in Gatewood Caper had me cringing.The parody, Stolen Cigar Case, was surprisingly refreshing, while Death and Compass had me scratching my head. I had to do a lot of research to understand the meaning.So this book is not recommended because of too many duds. I also expected short stories, not novellas. I am looking forward to the British Library Crime Classics.

I like the Everyman's Pocket Classics. I have several. This is a good book with a variety of stories that held my interest and I am sure I will read it again.

I've just started this for a course, but, ,so far, it seems to be a fine anthology. I'd expect nothing less from Everyman.

Enjoyed reading this compilation of detective stories. They were mind-boggling! They range from Edgar Allan Poe, Sherlock Holmes to the most contemporary detective writers.Overall, great compilation!

Beautifully printed & produced Everyman's Pocket Classics hardcover edition of a collection of detective stories. Some are well-known, some obscure & some are of indifferent quality of writing.
