fabulous fast-pace read
I truly loved the detectives, and how realistic dialogue was! The storyline and pace of the chapters kept me reading on and on. The broken and evil characters were also portrayed very realistically! Fast paced plot and truly human moments. So glad I found this author and series! Ms. Clark is truly gifted and does twisted very well!

Great origin story, hopefully will get better with time
Meh. This was all over the place. The underlying mystery was intriguing. The main character's origin story was heartbreaking and lent to this 'fresh beginning'. There is still more to unpack there. 30% of the way in I guessed 'who did it' without knowing really why. There were so many details that proved unnecessary- they added nothing. Throwing in more characters didn't add depth but frustration. Procedurally not great. Bad police work all around. If the next book is free, I might read it - again the origin story is worth delving into.

Kudos to author Tracy Clark
I’m finding this police procedural/psychological thriller well-written and absorbing with compelling characters driven by internal and external conflict.Homicide detective Harriet Foster has 17 years of experience as a Chicago cop. African-American and divorced as the result of her son's murder, she’s also just lost her long-time partner on the force to a suicide she never saw coming. Now, after extended leave, she’s back on the job at a new squad with a new partner, Jim Lonergan, who’s a real “dinosaur.” Before “Harri” has even had time to settle into her desk, she and Lonergan are sent to the scene of the grisly murder of Peggy Birch a blue-eyed, red-headed young woman. A Black teen was found unconscious only yards away from the body with a spot of blood on his clothing. Brash, bullying, opinionated, and rushing to judgment, Lonergan wants to arrest the teen immediately. Foster, who by the middle of the morning has just about had it with her new partner's chauvinism, knows they need to wait and see what the evidence has to say.Meanwhile, adult twin brother and sister, Bodie and Amelia, wrestle with their upbringing by a father who had a penchant for murdering young, red-headed women with blue eyes. They haven’t seen him for years, not since he dropped them off as freshmen at college, both of their tuitions completely paid. But the years they spent under his roof, where they became aware of what he was doing, have left their mark. Might one of them be involved in the murder? Or their father, if he's even still alive?Or how about one of Peggy’s friends from college? Or an ex-boyfriend? Or one of the people with whom she attended yesterday’s “defund the police” rally. It’s a murder mystery filled with suspects as well as many of the topical issues of today: racism, sexism, police power, women as police, stalking, and the psychology of alienated “outsiders,” to name just a few. The prose and dialogue are first-rate. Ms. Clark writes about police procedure and culture as surefootedly as if she had been a Chicago detective. It’s the first time I’ve read any of Ms. Clarke's work. Based on this outing, I’m positive it won’t be the last.

Hard Boiled Detective Mystery
Holy crap this was awesome. A hard-boiled detective story with a Black woman leading the charge, I didn't know I needed this genre and now I can't get enough. The story and mystery was excellent. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time not knowing when all was going to be revealed. I loved Harri, she's got a lot going on emotionally, but it never affects her peformance. She's brilliant, I love her and Detective Li. Griffin is the definition of a gruff but good boss. Add in a serial killer and the backdrop of Chicago, and it's a recipe for an amazing thriller. I will certainly be looking for more from Tracy Clark!

this is a great read, recommend, you won’t regret
This is my1st reading in this category and my 1st reading this author penmanship. Well, I enjoyed both. The storyline was great. The characters were well developed and relatable. My heart was all over the place for Harriet. I felt her pain. I promise Lornegan is so funny. I kind of figured out who the perp was earlier, I never felt it was the obvious suspects. Man, I’m so glad Boden was able to get a new leaf on life because babyyy, he was so thrilled to throw all caution to the wind. When he finally got info on his history, it was like he dipped in the pool of new life. Boden ending was so hilarious. Great job author.

Intense and iinvigorating.
Engaging through to the end. Makes me want more. Harriet is a complicated character that makes one want to find out where her life will take her and if she is able to move beyond her past.

Love it!
Now, I’m going to start off by saying that I love my crime and thriller novels, and have read enough to sink a small battleship. Impressing me the days is a tough gig. One of my all-time favourite authors is the late, great Sue Grafton and when I read that Tracy Clark had won two of her awards, I knew I had to read this book. It wasn't what I expected, but I wasn’t disappointed. The vibe is very different to that of Grafton. It is harder-edged, more intense and doesn’t have the humour. The characters are beautifully written and well-rounded, with believable back-stories and interactions. Did I work out what was going on? Yes, but that’s not unusual for me; the thing that was unusual was that although I had worked it out, and most of the aspects too, I wasn’t 100% certain until the author gave her secrets away. That is rare and I loved it!If I was to find something to picky about, it would be over a couple of characters that were quite well developed to a point, and then left hanging with no natural conclusion. It could be that there is an intention to bring them back in more detail in future novels, but it still felt as though there could have been something more definitive to conclude their journey in this one. In general, the book could have been a little tighter, particularly in the middle section, but that comes down to personal taste, and it didn't detract from a fabulous piece of work.All-in-all, I recommend this book. It’s well-worth a read.

Terrifyingly good…
No spoilers…I loved how this story began, slowly almost gently and with complete control. As the tale unfolds, the pressure and intrigue mount. This flowed beautifully from one page to the next.I’ve already pre-ordered the second book.

Interesting, a little dark.
I found this book interesting, if not a page-turner. Well-written, has a nice flow. Interesting twist. I wish there was more of a back story for the main character.

A great start to a new police detective series
It’s Detective Harriet Foster’s first day back after two devastating bereavements and she’s working with a new set of colleagues and on the trail of a sadistic killer. The investigation unfolds in a page-turning way with every suspect given their time under the spotlight. Scenes spent with two particular suspects crank up the suspense.Well written with a strong sense of place, this is a great start to a new police detective series set in Chicago. Harriet Foster is a likeable, rounded lead character. I’ll be looking out for book two.
