Q: Is this good for looking at old slides

yes, it is - but you need a good light behind it. Also, since you have to look directly into the viewer to see it, you have to squint, closing one eye. Tedious if you have to repeat the process continuously. A better choice, in my opinion, is to get a viewer with its own light, one that you can view by looking with both eyes at the screen, small though it may be.

Q: I read where someone used a viewer like this as a makeshift optical viewfinder for a digital camera LCD screen, because of sunlight glare; opinions?

You can see what is on the LCD screen but it is fuzzy, not clear. Not recommended. I have used mine to put a slide in it that I want to make a digital photo and put it up the the camera on the computer or Iphone and take a photo. Not perfect but workable.

I do not know the actual magnification level bit it works well as a slide sorter. Not something you would use to show slides.

Q: The white plastic front is dirty inside. Can it be detached to clean? Does it click off and on, or would that break it? Is there any way to clean it?

I was curious to see if mine was also dirty. It was. I couldn't remove the white plastic front, but I blew into the wider opening and it seemed to get rid of just about all of the dust inside. Now I am keeping mine in a ziploc sandwich bag to prevent the build up of dust.
