To many, Lloyd Estel "Cowboy" Copas is just a footnote to the Patsy Cline legend, having perished in the same plane crash that claimed her life and that of Hawkshaw Hawkins; but what many folks don't realize is that Cope had 14 hits during his lifetime while Patsy had but nine. Clearly, the intervening years have burnished and magnified Patsy's legend; they ve also unjustly neglected this early Grand Ole Opry stalwart. Now, Real Gone Music has assembled the most comprehensive Cowboy Copas collection to date: two CDs, 30 tracks including every hit and its accompanying, rarely-if-ever-compiled B-side. Cope got his start in Pee Wee King's band, and you can hear a bit of that bandleader's freewheeling approach to country in these songs, but you can also hear a bunch of other influences, too. In fact, as Colin Escott puts it in the accompanying liner notes, "His records were so personable and so unlike any others from that day and time. Not honky tonk, not bluegrass, not western swing, not hillbilly, not pop crossover, they could be labelled Cowboy Copas records."Offering both his complete hits and the rare B-sides, along with thorough annotation and photos from the King-Starday label archives, this Cowboy Copas collection is the one to have. Essential country spanning the years from 1946 to 1963, the year Cope died.

Very Pleased
The CD arrived just a few days after I placed the order. Considering I live in Hong Kong and did not ask for special delivery this is impressive. As I said in my title, I am very pleased with the service provided. The Songs on the CD are great. Anyone who like old style country and western music get this CD.

A country singer who died with Patsy Cline
Cowboy Copas had 14 country hits in two spells, 8 of them between 1946 and 1952, 4 between 1960 and 1963. All are included here together with their B-sides.His career had seemingly ended with a barren spell after his 1951 hit 'Tis sweet to be remembered, but then he he had an unexpected hit with Alamam', which not only made #1 on the country chat but stayed there for three months.Even that didn't do as much for his career as he hoped, because he only had three more hits before he became a victim of the most famous plane crash in country music history. The writer of the booklet notes points out that Cowboy Copas had more hits than Patsy Cline did at the time, and contrasts the attention subsequently given to Patsy with the lack of attention given to the others, I think it might have something to do with Patsy being a rising star at the time.If you enjoy traditional country music as it was in the forties and fifties, you are likely to enjoy this.

Again good music
I can't get enough of the Cowboy Copas sound however and this product is a good example of it, the rereleasers are again afraid to lay hands on the material. Copas made about one hundred single recordings for the King label, followed by 6 recordings for the DOT label and about a hundred songs for Starday. There were 6 King albums and about 20 Starday albums, There are 3 compliations with one side Copas and on the other side Hawkshaw Hawkins. Most of the Starday albums shows a lot of double songs for earlier releases and only a few King/Starday albums appeared on cd in their original form. A lot of the songs of this album already appeared in compilationalbums and only a few are actually new on cd.. For Copas collectors it fills some gaps. The sound quality is excellent and let's hope that this album makes the way for more Copas albums without the x release of the welknown songs. So I do hope to see the original albums or much better a chronological release of his songs. A 4 cd box could fill his complete Starday output. It would do honour to his legacy.Henk
