The Husqvarna Viking Emeralds are a family of machines ideal for all types of sewing, from a beautiful, one-of-akind dress to curtains that duplicate those seen in a magazine. The Emeralds 118 has many practical features you will love; i.e. the built-in needle threader, a handy Sewing Guide Reference Chart, a hard cover for storage and an effortless one-step buttonhole. Better yet, the Husqvarna Viking Emeralds are electronic machines that give you full piercing power when you sew. The Emerald 118 lets you adjust your sewing speed. Plus, you decide if the needle stops in the up or down position when you stop sewing. PERFECT STITCHES AND BUTTONHOLES When the urge to sew strikes, you want your sewing to be easy with beautiful results. That?s why the Emeralds have a useful Sewing Guide Reference Chart with each machine. The Chart recommends the right presser foot, stitch length and width, thread tension and presser foot pressure for different fabrics and techniques. Emerald 118 featur

This machine gets the job done!
I have gone through so many sewing machines for my small business. This machine consistently gets the job done. It can handle thick fabrics and stands the test of time. I am in the process of switching all of our employee machines to this one.

Smooth transitions from straight seams to seam joins.
Does not have umph needed to sew over seams. Very disappointing performance. Got it for everyday clothing sewing. Shoved in closet for extra machine.

Quiet and simple to use
OK first things first I am unashamedly a Husqvarna fan. I have been machine sewing since I was a small child and the first electric machine I owned my trusty optima 150 broke down 1 week ago. For me the 118 looked familiar but an upgraded version of my beloved optima 150. I couldn't have been more wrong, the 118 is so much better. Withing an hour of unboxing my first projects are sewn, floor length curtains and new sofa cushion inners. The machine is easy to set up, easy to get going, very intuitive. For people that have been sewing for years there is ample to keep us happy whereas for newbie stitches it is a simple and forgiving enough machine that you won't be put off

A sturdy workhorse
I needed an upgrade from my more basic domestic to a sturdier machine, and the Viking Emerald came highly recommended. It certainly lives up to its reputation; sews very smoothly, comes with a good selection of stitches/ feet, and has features such as an auto needle threader, thread cutter, and needle up/down button that make it a pleasure to use.

Very good
This sewing machine is awesome. Bought it to my wife and she is now learning to sew. She is loving it. It seems very well built and relatively easa to use. Only bad point is the hard cover, it doesn't fit very well on the machine.

A semi-pro, competent machine for anyone serious about being creative
This is a big step up from my first machine: A Brother LS14S. After much research and recommendations by professionals who had used this before buying ridiculously expensive machines, I forked out the coinage and treated myself.I thought by spending £90 on a beginner machine, I would be satisfied for a long time. It lasted less than I year before I found it was so limiting and I couldn't do all the things I had now learned to do. I wish I had bought this one sooner, but then I didn't know what I know now: That having the power to manually alter the stitch length and width, even while sewing, gives you the power to do anything. On a straight stitch, the when to alter the width becomes a needle positioner, so you can move the needle within the foot to the edge of what you want to sew. This opens up complicated sewing patterns that might be tricky on lesser machines.I'm not going to go into everything this machine can do, there is a whole playlist of videos on Youtube that I urge anyone to watch, as it's easier than following the manual (not that the manual is bad) and it's fun to learn what this baby can do, with things like stretchy straight stitches, decorative patterns that can be adjusted with a wheel to give different effects, an option to lower the feed dogs for embroidery with a simple lever, a wheel to adjust the foot tension, and many useful feet and a seam ripper included that I never knew I needed until I used it. Correcting mistakes is so much simpler now.I am pleased to also find that my cheapo Brother bobbins also work on this machine. I had done a tonne of research where people say you need special Emerald 118 bobbins which cost loads if you can even find them. That advice is absolute bobbins! Bobbins that fit my LS14S work perfectly and holding them up there is barely any difference in size. One final thing, this machine is fast and pretty strong. I had vinyl boots that I had tried sewing on my Brother, which was impossible. The bobbin would never catch, it really struggled. I was finally able to sew them on this machine. I still had the odd dropped stitch, but I'm so happy it was able to do it. I think the stronger motor helps.....Oh and the auto needle threader is a GOD SEND!CONS:Nothing is perfect and this machine does have a few short comings....1. Speed control: I assumed that the speed controller would be more dramatic on the level of control, however I still find the slowest speed to be a little to quick, and all the speed lever does is limit the foot pedal so it only has one speed (slow, but not slow enough when doing really fine work). I'm someone who likes precision over speed. I find I've never had to go at full speed as it's way to quick for me.2. Electronic foot pedal was over hyped. I was told that being an electronic foot pedal it is more accurate. While I find it to be okay and workable, it seems to be the one downgrade from my Brother. I believe this is due to the technology being about 10 years old now in this machine so is showing it's age. It's not bad and is broader and easier to use, I was just hoping for something with more precision. The machine's slowest speed just kicks in at about 3 stitches a second, whereas with the LS14S, you could push it gently and hear the motor turn with the needle barely moving. That said, the option to electronically put the needle in the up or down position, which it remembers when stopping, makes it more precise in this regard, so it's just a matter of getting used to it.3. Little niggle: The light is not LED. Another sign of aging tech. It's sufficient, just not going to last anywhere near as long before needing to be replaced.4. I lied: I have another niggle: There is good storage space potential, but some dummy decided to design it without utilizing it. A large section pulls out for doing sleeves, and this has a huge amount of space for all your feet, needles and nik-naks, but they left a huge part of it with a hole so anything you put in there falls out. I put card and tape all over this to use as storage despite the efforts of some silly engineer. There is also a tray in the top which is useful but you can clearly see that there is more space inside the housing where they could have made it deeper and wider. Design choices like this baffle me.
