If you think you know what cross stitch is, look again! Jamie Chalmers, aka Mr X Stitch, shows you how to cross stitch using simple step-by-step instructions and also takes you to the frontiers of cross stitch design. Showcasing colleagues who are pushing the boundaries of this ancient craft, Mr X Stitch introduces more than 20 lovely, cutting-edge projects to make, and shows that beauty, innovation and 'craftivism' are alive and kicking in this inspirational book. The book is aimed at stitchers of all abilities, from absolute beginners looking to learn a new craft to embroiderers and cross stitchers who want to do something different in cross stitching. For many, cross stitch conjures up images of cute kittens and country cottages, but this book shows people that there’s a different side to cross stitching – that it’s an art in its own right, and will encourage them to be a little braver with their art. Jamie’s writing style is fun, entertaining and highly inspirational. The book will attract readers of all ages, and is aiming to appeal to men as well as women. It will teach the basics of cross stitching, including materials, tools, techniques, colour blending, etc., but will also put Jamie’s own spin on it, with urban flavours, and the introduction of different materials such as glow-in-the-dark threads. There will be several exciting designs for the readers to stitch, and Jamie will arm people with the skills and inspiration to create cross stitch designs of their own, for example, by using photos and other images for reference. Jamie is particularly interested in typography and there is a good balance of typographical and pictoral projects to stitch. The book is split into 5 themes: Colour, Glow in the Dark, More than a Hobby, Using Computer Software and Outside the Hoop. Colour explores techniques such as ombre design, inverting colour and using geometric shapes; Glow in the Dark looks at how to use glow-in-the-dark threads to achieve different effects; More than a Hobby considers the idea of mindfulness in cross stitch, including black work, backstitch etc.; Using Computer Software looks at photorealism and how to originate your design on a computer; and finally, Outside the Hoop explores projects not stitched on canvas. The final spread of each section features an Outlier - the work of another stitcher to illustrate a different aspect of cross stitch made on a surface other than canvas. The book will be informative, fun, instructive and inspirational. Review: Fun read! - I loved reading this book! Easy read with very understandable explanations of how to do a variety of things-stitching, finishing a project, and even framing. Beautiful color pictures and examples of projects from others. Would love to see more books by this author! Review: Love it! - I can't imagine giving this book a negative review. It's absolutely wonderful! I can't wait to make Mona Lisa and the pineapple. Red work inside of letters, a retro pattern, geek stuff, stitching on metal! Who knew there was glow in the dark thread? The framing info is so helpful. I always struggle with that part. Don't hesitate to buy It!

Nice but not enough information
This is a nice publication but if you REALLY want to know how to get started with cross stitching this just won’t do. You need to look at some of the many videos on the internet for more practical guidance. And they’re free!

This book inspires my creativity
This is an absolutely beautiful book on beginning to cross stitch, and it is much more than just how-tos on old-lady cross stitching; the book contains an artful presentation of cross stitch as both craft and art form and describes the world of cross stitch that extends beyond granny squares and samplers. This book is for someone who wants to learn to cross stitch while also developing their consciousness of the craft, which has been historically undermined because of its association with femininity, into a form of art that can be played with in unconventional ways. You won’t find anything in here explaining frogging your work (as one reviewer lamented) probably because Chalmers would argue against doing so and to instead roll with it and create something new out of the perceived mistakes.

This is not a book of charts, BUT it is a GREAT book for beginners!
Great book with lots of great tips for beginners. Not as many charts as I was hoping it would have, but the tips and pointers and explanations of things more than make up for it. The charts that are included are great, high-quality, and very interesting. If you're looking for a book to get a beginner, GET THIS ONE!

Wonderful book!
This book is a complete joy, extremely clear and comprehensive. I took up this craft 12 years ago and still picked up some great tips and ideas. Every stitcher should have this book in their library. Thank you, Mr. X Stitch for this amazing effort.

Lovely intro to Cross-stitch
I liked the section on pattern design, as I am more interested in this, and in manipulating pre-existing patterns.

Fantastic book
Been looking forward to this book and I wasn't disappointed, I do have many cross stitch books and this is my favourite by far. This book has loads of great patterns, which range from Glow in the dark (which is something I've always wanted to try), to Mona Lisa, as well as a blackwork pattern. All the patterns in the book are modern (not the standard sampler), are beautifully photographed, and easy to follow. Would recommend this book to any beginner or advanced cross stitcher as the patterns range in difficulty. Can't wait to start stitching some of these.
